How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Brilliantly! We had fantastic discussions and they loved the starter of the stolen lunch box - a lot of perspectives.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I have learnt so much and have since noticed so many books and resources available to buy on the topic, that I love. I have personally got a much greater understanding and look forward to teaching this again in the future.
The resources that came with this kit were exceptional! I was so proud of the display that this created. Children absolutely loved the mapping task - a fun mystery that they had to solve. Children loved the game and I wish there was time that we could've created a museum and completed more independent research.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? From the minute you start the first activity you can see many perspectives. It opens learners eyes to the other side, what was missed and what could have been. This kit really is good.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? This kits give a view point from another perspective. It has made teaching NZ history more approachable and because it was easy to implement it made it fun!
The learners loved it and we all saw that one of the dangers of the ‘one story’ meant that the truth could easily get lost in the retelling. The learners’ versions of how the envelope came to be in the museum were very creative ranging from tragic tales of woe, to rollicking mayhem and adventure.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? With pairs working with a card each, the students viewed the event from their cards perspective and we discussed the feelings behind each character. The objects writing also helped them to think from a new perspective.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? This emphasised how a scenario could be viewed and taught to incorporate perspectives. It also showed how much could be done around understanding one event.
What a unique way to learn so much about what an encounter would have been like between Maori and Captain's Cooks crew. There were a number of crucial literacy skills addressed and, in particular, it asked the students to think critically. They had to question, explore unknown words and make connections. It actually highlighted to me what little they could draw on to make sense of the character cards. Great, authentic experience.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? We discussed that that a narrative doesn’t just say what happened, it says why it was important, what it means for who the person is, for who they’ll become, and for what happens next. The narrative becomes a form of identity. Whether fictional or nonfict
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I was worried that talking about the hostilities and terrible violence that has taken place in the past, would stir up bad feelings. But I think we need to be aware of the various perspectives on what took place in our history to understand how people's c
I did this with my Year 4 class of nine and 10 year olds. We loved creating our own museum display of artefacts from the Endeavour. We read the book 'The Adventures of Tupaia' alongside the kit. Children enjoyed working out on the map where to place their stickers to indicate where each of the characters were on 9th November 1769. When I asked my class what they learned from this experience and what they most enjoyed, I think that aspects of weaving together the different perspectives was beyond many of them. What they most enjoyed was learning about Tupaia's journey travelling with Captain Cook on his discovery of New Zealand. It was fantastic when I played the video from the museum curator and we were so excited when the artefacts arrived. Children sent invitations to parents and other classes to visit our exhibition. Oh, and they loved sampling the carrot marmalade. Thank you for a great school kit. Much appreciated.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The beginning activity with all the different stories surrounding the one event was such a fantastic learning experience. Subsequent activities meant the children could draw on what each other could remember from the card they studied and were able to go
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? To be aware of ALL perspectives surrounding the event, regardless of age, race, gender and religion.
Amazing, amazing, amazing! I really learnt something that I never knew, right alongside the children. As we peeled away the layers of the story and put it all back together, we learnt how important it is to have ALL of a story. The children and I fell in love with Tupaia, were amazed by his knowledge and wisdom, awed by his creativity and keenly felt his grief for his homeland. There were so many rich activities, and I loved using Facebook for ideas.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The students we able to explore the Maori culture (something not really done at this school) and see how Cook's landing had significant and long lasting impacts on the indigenous people of Aotearoa. This kit kept them interested right up until the last mi
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It was great to look at the impact on both sides and how a simple misunderstanding/difference of perspective can lead to such a catastrophic outcome. It was a very different angle than how I was taught about interactions at school. I loved the inclusion o
This kit was such a success for my class with a really high level of interest and engagement. It allowed for some really interesting discussions and I loved how it took the children down different tangents with their research. They loved the hands-on aspect of the museum exhibition and was big success showing off our learning to the parents and community. I would love to do a kit similar to this in the future. What I especially liked is how it was adaptable for all ages.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? I have a class that is predominantly Maori. They were as much appalled as I was that history had been distorted to suit a European context. They are now more aware there are multiple perspectives to our history and that cultural bias has allowed only one
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I went through school with a pakeka bias towards issues relating to our past where Maori history was not on the agenda. The subject matter of this unit has been quite a revelation to me. To think that this happened on our doorstep and been ignored for so
Fantastic unit for teaching a neglected part of New Zealand history and previous cultural bias which rendered Maori issues as insignificant.
