How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I would like to learn more New Zealand history for myself. I would need to be confident of my facts in order to teach my students. Thank you one again for a great experience.
Thank you for this Kit. The learning and conversation were valuable. I was astounded at the differing opinions students brought in from their parents.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The kit gave multiple view points to talk about, not just the main players involved in an event, which is something that they had not had to think about before. We read the cards a few times as pairs which was then shared with the group. Then we read them
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I have always believed that New Zealand History should have a bigger focus within primary schools, and include more Māori history prior to European settlement. The kit helps start this discussion within the classroom in a novel and easy way. The kids love
This kit was used with a small group of Year 4s. It was great to see them read then compare the information from each card. Using what they read created a fantastic discussion. It was challenging, but from the discussion they were able to find the location of everyone on the map. The questions (and answers) that arose from understanding why the objects would have been included in a museum display was very rewarding to be a part of. I feel that the children involved got a lot out of the kit. Oral language, understanding of two sides to everything and more of an appreciation of our history. Thank you School Kit and sponsors for this opportunity.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? This kit nail the right spot with multiple perspectives, the kids started to understand what it meant to get both sides of the story and how to listen to each other before giving their side of an argument.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It helped me understand the importance of not just teaching the Treaty of Waitangi and has given me confidence to explore more in my practice.
Thank you so much for this kit, it was a practical hands on experience for both myself and the children and opened their eyes to another aspect of NZ history. The resources were amazing and helped us explore the situation much more in-depth.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The learning around perspectives has been immense and they now really understand why I ask for both sides of the story when there has been a problem. They also realise that just because someone tells you what happened that doesn't necessarily mean they ha
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Not so much changed my perspective as it has always been something I have been keen on, but more my confidence and giving me a place to start. I have discovered so much more information and understanding from the kit but also from following the Tuia 250 p
What an amazing resource this has been for my class. Thank you so much for such a brilliant unit of work that has kept my class engaged and enthusiastic about finding out more.Unfortunately I got quite sick near the end of term 3 which changed the way we were able to do things. We also lost our only display wall to a lovely big sliding door. However this hasn't stopped us from doing some fabulous learning about our history. The children enjoyed learning about the different characters and the roles they played not only in the story but also in the daily life of the people they lived with. My class became quite fascinated with what life was like on a ship in 1769 and also what it was like for the Maori people living in NZ at this time. They have also enjoyed following the flotilla - some have been to seen them - and the other events on the Tuia 250 site. They have written about a day in the life of their object and worked in groups to put the story together. This year we have done a couple of virtual trips to Te Papa so they enjoyed thinking about doing their own museum displays. As a lot of what we had done had to come down when I was away sick unfortunately we don't have many photos. The children wrote about what they had learnt from this work and some students have summarised some of the answers which are included here: Captain Cook had to bring small items to trade with the people living here. There was a misunderstanding but it got fixed. There is always at least 2 sides a story - has helped us when problems arise at school. Not everyone is there when something happens so they can’t tell you what exactly happened. The Maori people ate fish, birds, vegetables they grew before the Europeans came. Not everyone knows exactly what happens so they shouldn’t just repeat what other people say. Rats came on the ships. When people have different languages, sometimes problems can arise. The people on the ship renamed places that already had Maori names. The variety of responses showed quite a diverse range of learning but all mentioned every story having at least 2 sides. They were also intrigued to find out that they found it easier to find out about the ships rather than life in NZ in 1769. Thank you again for such an awesome unit. I intend to use a lot of it again next year with my new class to kick start us on our learning about NZ history. I am feeling very keen to get started again already. And again my apologies for not managing to stick to the deadlines.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It was really interesting as we have a massively diverse class (kids in our school are born in about 40 different counties) and they could see similarities between themselves and the different perspectives given in the kit. Awesome
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It shows how little the kids know, and how focused on only the Treaty of Waitangi we have become. Has also made me consider how to integrate different parts of New Zealand history into what I am currently doing, and why it is so very important.
Fab kit for a very diverse class of learners who come from all corners of the world BUT knew nothing of this. Kids were engaged and interested, and by giving multiple perspectives, the kids were able to delve into different peoples thoughts and ideas.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? We integrated the kit with Reading and various articles from School Journals etc looking at the different cultures involved in the events. We had rich discussions about the events.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I have learnt to see events from different perspectives and help my students achieve the same.
Another fantastic School Kit. The resources are always high quality and engaging for the students. Our class particularly enjoyed writing from the perspective of the various things in the envelope.

This has been one of the most enjoyable school kits we have had. The exhibition items created so much discussion and made a beautiful display in the room that is often commented on. The character cards and the story of what happened was one of the richest discussions we had all year in regards to empathy, perspectives, conflict resolution and problem-solving.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Students are more likely to question the thinking around ideas and also not just accept what they are told.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Looking at multiple views and questioning what we take as granted in NZ history. Also shows how it can be an engaging and interesting experience rather than just a study.
The kids really enjoyed the prompts and were really buzzing. Got some great writing out of it and served as a launching point for learning more about NZ history
