How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It has defintely taught me how to approach this to a range of people and to enforce that there are two sides to a story! I learnt a lot and I have learnt some about the Treaty of Waitangi.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? There were lots of different pieces of information that linked together . With subtle differences but enough to link. This was good as it made my students use their reading comprehension skills to make the connections.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? i need to have more information for me to feel comfortable with the topic. I am under skilled in this topic and value these kits even more so.

“WOW! what an eye opener for my students. They didnt even realise that events could be seen from different perpectives. It was very engaging for my students. We used this as part of our reading programme. Thinking critically, inferencing evaulating you name it! What really helped was this topic was every where. My students were hearing all sorts of information and versions from all sorts of social media. This made it very real and more engaging.”

“This kit was very intense, and actually became a bit much for our kids. It was incredibly well presented, and the information in it was fantastic. However, it quickly went over the heads of the students I had this year. They found it very difficult to understand all the different parts of the puzzle. They loved the ";Who stole my lunch"; activity. It did tie in well when we looked at our local history of Rangiriri and hearing the different sides of the story there.”

“My year 7 students were really challenged by this kit. They liked that there was so much they could gleam from Tuia 250 events around the nation, reported on the news and in their own research. It really engaged them in the tasks and many visited, in their own time, the travelling exhibition truck with their families. Creating a poem from their street names, and seeing the similarity and differences with where they have lived in Aotearoa, tied in well with our literacy focus.”

Children really saw the challenges which come from multiple viewpoints and it helped them to understand the conflict that can arise from seeing things from only one side. How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Wonderful resources to help bring history alive. The museum artefacts provided great opportunities to look at the importance of objects as stores of knowledge. The children really bought into the learning and were engaged throughout as a result.
