How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It was great to be able to have students examine what happened from different perspectives and put themselves in the shoes of people who were involved. This has been a huge eye opener for the class and they have learnt that conflict can start by 2 people
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Have a resource such as this where everything is in the same place and easy to follow makes teaching NZ History so much easier as it can often be hard to find appropriate resources to do this.
This kit had my students engaged in and fascinated in New Zealand History. Great being able to have a resource that allows students to learn about the history of their own country, heritage and culture. This kit lead to great writing, drama activities and discussions.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? My year 7 students came to understand the danger of telling a single story, that it is so important to listen to a number of different view points. The museum visit was valuable in supporting the students to tell different stories - Tupaia was not known
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It has made me aware how little our students know about the first contact in NZ of the Maori people and Europeans. I will really make sure that students understand that there are so many stories to listen to without judgement being made immediately.
The kit along with the online resources formed the basis of our context for term 3 -The danger of telling a single story. The students enjoyed the character cards and matching them up with the important objects. They worked in groups often, reinforcing their character's story. The kit made my students think about Tupaia and the key role he played as a part of the Endeavour crew. We followed up with a museum visit where the students embedded their knowledge and had the hands on experience of navigation, seeing exactly how NZ was mapped and taking a closer look at life on board the Endeavour and really thinking about what it would have been like landing in NZ! They were horrified at how quickly things happened so disastrously at the first meetings.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It made it very clear that everything sees and thinks about things differently. It especially helped when when come to solving playground issues. Students could now put themselves in their peers shoes, and view from their perspective.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I have always tried to teach an accurate component of NZ history. The kit made it easier as it was child friendly material. Often what we have to work with it too adult centred.
Fantastic engaging kit! Tino pai! This kit engaged the tauira on a topic that is difficult to teach - multiple perspective. To see from someone else's view is so important.

The kit was great for drawing in the students to link them to the stories of what had happened and they could bring their own stories to link and go alongside them. Highly enjoyed this piece of mahi

Room 5 at St Theresa's have loved learning about Cook's first interactions with Maori. All of the children have developed a deeper understanding of how different points of view can alter understanding. We have also been able to talk about the contrasts between life on board the Endeavour and life in pre-European NZ. We enjoyed looking for connections between people on the character cards. These connections were really important in establishing a sense of the story. We used the cards in pairs and looked for connections between each others. Finding out about the objects and how they might have been used in the 1700's was really interesting. We tried to find a photo of a kowhai tree in Kew Gardens but could only find lots or references to kowhai being planted there.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Students struggled at first to understand that could people can have different perspectives and the way they developed the ability to ask questions and take their learning to the next level with this kit was outstanding.

The Tuia kit gave students a chance to engage in different perspectives and the students particularly enjoyed the individual people cards.
