School kit, you've done it again! Our year 7&;8 students at St. Peter's Catholic School in Cambridge, have been intrigued and fascinated with the 'As I Saw it' kit. We have contributed, collated, communicated and investigated the different perspectives of both the local Maori people and those on board the Endevour back in 1869 when Captain James Cook and his crew first arrived in Whitianga. So many different points of view with great cause for discussion. Thank you Schoolkit.

Room 27 at Avonhead School making connections between the characters in the As I Saw It kit. They read the first card I gave them and then I asked them to switch with someone - was so cool seeing the penny starting to drop that they were connected. Now have children looking for certain people to piece all of the story together.

Thank you school kit. My class really got engaged with learning about the story of as I saw it. We made our own ship biscuits too with mix responses.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It has helped to increase my knowledge and interest in New Zealand history. It has helped increase my confidence teaching history through our writing programme. It prompted more questions which I wanted to seek answers for.
Fantastic resource! An interesting and creative way to get students engaged in an event which is part of New Zealand history. A great starting point to increase teacher knowledge and understanding. A great way to present information and share with an audience!

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? This was a tricky idea for them to grasp. They did get the idea after watching news clips of recent day protesters and reading more about Captain Cook, and Tupaia the students could see why some people today think that celebrating Captain Cook arriving in
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I studied NZ history at University and think that the way this kit was presented in a good model for future activities. My students want to know more about their history now which is very exciting. One of the things they are interested in is the protests
This was my first experience with using one of your kits so I was not sure what to expect. I apologise for taking so long to write a review - the activities have taken my Year 4 class a lot longer than I thought. Piecing together each of the characters perspective of the event was a very complex activity - this surprised me. Some children got it straight away while others began to get an understanding once we acted out where everyone was and what they were doing. I love that it extended the students thinking. Each child created a newspaper article using Google Docs where their character was the eye witness - tricky if you had the character that got shot. The students loved the You Tube clips they thought that it was only them who had been asked to create the exhibit. We are still working on this. Each child wanted to make a diorama with their object.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It certainly extended their thinking to consider all the other persons side of the story before we make any conclusions. I will send their photos in another email Thanks you Diane Harry Waitakere Primary.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Firstly the knowledge of Aotearoa history needs to built in to the curriculum so we have some thing to build on. It is very difficult for students at this level to understand these stories without prior knowledge of the time and place.
The inquiry followed the format we had used when investigating an incident in our room in term 2, when no one saw what had actually happened- a crime scene. We were ready for several different stories to eventuate and accept that any or all of them could be true. This story was helped by the story cards and artifacts from the museum, Museum exhibition, Adventures of Tupaia story book and Cook's Cook by Gavin Bishop. Plus all the other sites of info which the students chose to inquire into themselves.- eg stars, navigation, waka, sailing ships of the day, NZ map, etc. The difficulty was the students at Y 5/6 had little knowledge to bring to this time or about maori living in Aotearoa at this time. It took a whole term plus 2 weeks this term, but everyone wanted to continue. It culminated last Thursday with the sharing afternoon with our room 16 buddy class of Y2 students. They were tuned in by the learning about Tupaia from our Matua who gives weekly lessons in our school.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The children were already aware of diversity, as many come from different cultures with different rituals. then and now came out strongly through use of the kit but it also provoked discussions about perspectives and rituals from other cultures ( Sri Lank
Students: The contents of the envelope were quite shocking how things that we consider boring now, were valuable back then and used for trading. It is interesting how things have evolved especially the variety and quantities of food available now. The items in the envelope were quite random when we consider their importance today. Helen: Our school production in term 3 was about James Cook's first voyage on the Endeavour. As part of this the children did a lot of research into a specific person involved in the voyage. They also delved deeply into how life was very different back then. Unfortunately we were unable to use the kit to its fullest extent due to the demands of the Production but the children enjoyed the character reviews and were enthralled with the items in the envelope. It was great watching and listening to the videos from the Museum.
