How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? This resource has enhanced and promoted deeper thinking about our place in the world and how we came to be here. My students were engaged and inspired to explore further into their whakapapa and the history of Aotearoa. Thank you for the resources!
An excellent and highly topical resource that can be re-used for future years. It links very well with the renewed focus on the history of Aotearoa.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The map was an extremely useful visual tool which allowed the students to really put themselves in the shoes of these historic figures. Looking at one single event in history that was so definitive in shaping relationships between the Maori and British wa
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? The kit has made the teaching more inclusive of a range of diverse cultural histories. By bringing Tupaia to the forefront of the story instead of the usual James Cook angle, I feel that the students engaged in a really meaningful way with the materials a
We attended the museum exhibition as the very first group to come through the doors which was extremely exciting. I was very impressed by the knowledge of the guides and the incorporation of the various mediums within the showcase as well as the use of musical instruments and the variety of activities to enhance the children's learning. Before our visit, I had contacted the museum to inquire about the use of the kit in line with the exhibit and no one knew how they fit with each other which I did find somewhat disappointing. It would have been useful to know whether working through the kit beforehand during school time would have supported the museum experience.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I sadly knew very little about captain Cook so it has opened my eyes to thinking far more about our history and thinking about at least 2 sides of the story
This was another amazing school kit. We learned so much, not only about this historic event but different views. The discussions were great.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It's really shown me how vital it is that children are taught NZ history. There are so many versions floating around and it's important to give them the opportunity to learn about the right one. Thoroughly enjoyed this resource.
This was a fantastic kit! The resources were great and all of the children were so interested in them. Lots of great questions were raised and connections were made throughout the exploration of the objects. My knowledge improved a lot too. The children loved the cards and loved making connections.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I had always been slightly anxious to teach NZ history, as I was never sure that I had the 'right' story. This kit taught me that we have a duty to teach ALL perspectives of History, so that our students can become informed and compassionate adults who ca
This School Kit resource was outstanding. I am a long time user of School Kit and have always enjoyed the fun perspective that the kits bring to the classroom, but I was absolutely blown away by the deeper level thinking that this kit was able to bring out of my kids. We used the kit in conjunction with another class for collaborative mixed ability learning. We were able to link the ideas about multiple perspectives, synthesising and point of view to numerous other learning areas. The unit even fit perfectly with supplementary instructional texts about Tupaia and Captain Cook. My students were so excited when the 'mystery' package arrived at the office from the Auckland Museum, my Year 6 class still believe the ships biscuit is 250 years old! We ended the unit with an interactive multimedia student-designed museum exhibit that all the classes in our school visited, kick-starting other classes to begin their learning journey into Tuia 250. I will try and send a video to you on the Facebook page. Thank YOU School Kit!

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Teaching history doesn't need to be as complex as I thought. There are lots of different ways to teach. School Kit is fantastic with this.
Lots of ideas around simplifying and sharing NZ history making it easier to share knowledge with students.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Please comment above.
This kit was introduced in a fun but dramatic way with something my lunch going missing off my table , when the class was spread around the school. The students were most concerned about this and from there we worked on the school location map to depict where we all were. The variety of places and what they saw was all different, hence ";As I Saw It";. The unit moved on from there to different stories about history, depending on where you are, who you are, your perspective etc. We then onto Captain Cook's arrival in Mercury Bay and a location map of New Zealand. The students loved the character cards and using the objects and working out who would have had them, why and how they would have been used back in NZ's history. Different stories were put together by different groups depending on their perspective. The students are well aware now that we can sometimes see the same thing but can give different recounts of what we saw.
