Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I tried carrots out of the school garden - I thought you could only get carrots at the supermarket but they taste the same." "Milk comes from the supermarket but the farmer has to look after the cows and make sure they are healthy so we can have milk from them."

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Bricks were definitely a hit. The children followed the instructions for how to make the farm and then it evolved into more and more their own versions of farms.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? These children know about fresh food and where it comes from. They know what a farmer does and when they look out the window when driving the outskirts of Hamilton I know they will make the connections to the farmland they see.

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? Lots of vocabulary ! and using our senses to taste foods. We made butter - and then used it in our pikelets (that we also made ourselves)

“Thank you for providing another wonderfully thought-out and well-resourced School Kit for us. We (my class of 5yr olds) made a 'mystery' out of opening the plain cardboard box - making lots of predictions about what it could be and deciphering any words on the outside that we could read. We were excited to see other boxes inside the box. Once opened we followed the instructions to make the Countdown farm - there was enough for everyone to do 2 each. We linked the learning about the farm to another school kit I had done in the past about the little gardens and the vege patch match - tasting and eating different veges. We learnt about how farmers grow our food and look after the animals in NZ and we tasted lots of different fruits and vegetables that we can grow locally. We also used the farm kit to learn about vehicles on the farm and being in the Waikato children see a lot of the big tractors as they drive around but they were not sure about some of the other machines they notice. It was great to use the bingo game and it has multiple ways to play which made it easy to increase the difficulty once they had played a few times. We really enjoyed the Countdown Farm Bricks and all of the work that has gone into making the kit and are looking forward to many more exciting learning kits from School Kit. Thank you to all involved for a rich learning experience for us all.”

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The animals were great for counting in rows.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? We have combined the kit with another kits of basic pieces and it has been used regularly for maths arrays and some fractions work.

Bastian - I liked how they had lots of different stuff, the vegetables, the tractor, and all the fruit. It was super fun that you could stack the animals and make families.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them I didn’t know what an aubergine was. I liked learning about the farm machines.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The lego. The kids made it and played with it and there was so much chatter about what the parts of things were and veges etc. esp for my special needs kids.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Know where food comes from. We are a town school. Some kids have never been to an orchard or farm.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Student 1 - I liked building the truck with my big buddy. He helped me. He showed me how to do the tricky parts.Students 2 - I have some of these at home, not all of them. It was hard to make but I kept trying

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The Te Reo aspects was very helpful for me as I am early on in my te reo journey. They were easy to use and something that I will use with future classes.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The oral language that come from all the discussions around who had these at home, while building the different things and through the play that continues everyday has been valuable. .

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? As we are a Structured literacy school and follow a scope and sequence our literacy looks completely deferent now to what it has been in the past. We did not do any writing based off the bricks but we did do a lot of orally - we know that oral language is the stepping stone of literacy so it has played a vital part this way.

“The Farm Bricks kit was a really engaging and age-appropriate kit for my class. The Te Reo aspect was at a level that our students even as New Entrants could attempt. Some of the building of the larger vehicles were a bit hard for my class but we got the help from some older students which was a great way to build relationships. We have used the materials in our class almost every day since completing the activities so the materials (lego) itself is something that is practical. The activities are well thought out and easy to follow.”
