Challenging Racism 19 Reviews

I adapted a few of the resources to fit with Health and Inquiry studies. The detail with the planning is always useful and deepens on planning. The games and resources are always high quality. The Teachers journal was valuable to give me time to think about the issues. I have slotted activities in over a long period of time - and even after several months break, brought back the topic of discrimination to further build on learning.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The children have become more aware of stereotypes and now have an understanding of what racism is. What it can look like and sound like.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We do have a positive culture in our class, however I do think it has helped the children to be more aware of how they respond to each other and others. It has grown their understanding of differences and the importance of celebrating their uniqueness.
Thank you for another great kit - this kit fitted in very well to our kindness inquiry. It was an appropriate time to use the kit (Term 4) as we had responded in our own way to the mosque attacks with a fundraiser where we drew positive chalk images as a school to show unity, as well as a peace poem book that I delivered to the mosque. I felt at the time these responses were appropriate and leaving the racism side to later alongside our kindness has worked well. We are still working through it, however have used the targets to show our support networks and differences, we have also enjoyed the stereotype pictionary and this has been a great way to introduce stereotypes which we are still in the middle of exploring. Thank you for responding with this kit which brings up very important issues for discussion and exploration.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The ";Tell your teacher something they won't know"; activity was a reminder that we need to take the time to 'listen' to our students, and that they do actually try even when we get frustrated with them.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Reinforced what we were doing already, brought new ideas into learning and challenged us to embed what we were doing. There are definitely some activities I will be repeating next year with my new homeroom, in particular what they want me to know (will do
This was a great unit that we used to reinforce the learning we had undertaken at the beginning of the year, getting to know our students, whānau and community.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The use of the games to introduce some really hard to understand/talk about ideas, helped me to think about my approach. The cards with what we can do and what we need to achieve helped us be very reflective and it is a way to reflect that I'll be using a
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? The students have really thought about how hateful comments about others can impact lives for many years to come and have a negative effect on communities, not just people.
This was a very well put together kit. The resources worked well in my class and it made it very easy to talk about hard hitting subjects.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? It was a great chance for the kids to reflect and consider themselves as well as experiences relative to outside of their environment. For some kids, they weren't even aware of much outside of their environment.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We used the kit to make the classroom more safe and secure, so we had a choice to share or not too share but also we learned about respecting each others boundaries and opinions
It was a great unit, especially for my year 5/6 class. We'd done a lot on working together as a group and this helped solidify that along with brought in some other important aspects.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The children are more aware of different viewpoints and how they can help to make their environments better places to be, just by changing something very small but significant.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Children are more self-aware; able to ask questions about others and are more worldly wise.
This kit provided a fantastic opportunity to better understand how the children in my class see themselves and others. All the different activities were accessible to all and provided rich conversations.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We will definitely use ideas from this at the start of the school year for learning about identity. The action plan had a positive impact on the class. We learnt about the importance of pronouncing each other’s names correctly. We understand everyone in o
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Thanks School Kit, we’ve enjoyed this kit. There was lots of interesting discussion. We learnt new things about each other and each other’s cultures. We loved the ‘What I wish my teacher knew.’ We will definitely do this next year. The Pictionary was great. I adapted it to the ages of my class. We had a great discussion about gender stereotypes. The class poem was amazing, the children came up with great ideas and the children loved what was said about them. A very positive experience. (Shame I forgot the ‘a or an!’ Good discussion around Checking our work!!!) I did this kit with Years 3 and 4.

This was an incredibly challenging kit for both the students and myself, it caused us to reflect on actually how complacent of racism we have become, our own language, jokes, snide comments and what we thought was acceptable.
