What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Students are more aware of how they speak to and interact with each other. This will be an area to continue focusing on in 2020.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students were more compassionate and inclusive within our classroom, but also when working with students in other classes during maths/ buddy reading/ tuakana teina sessions.
A great kit that helped to enhance and strengthen the respect, tolerance, inclusiveness and understanding in a multi-cultural classroom. The stereotyping activity was a great way to challenge students beliefs and the concept of ";labelling"; people. It lead into a great discussion about kindness and compliments. We ended up deviating from the plan slightly as another member posted the Just Because I Am poem idea. Students wrote their own and they were so powerful that we shared them in our class assembly. Another teacher commented that the language and messages that came from my students were so powerful that she nearly cried and asked for me to share the lesson plan with her so she could do it with her class.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? It was a bit late in the year for much of an impact to be felt, hence the reason for offering it as a beginning of year topic.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Listening to the opinions of others was the major change, particularly for the boys to listen to the girls!
This was a terrific idea for a kit, and it worked really well for the most part with a challenging class! 18 outspoken boys and 10 quiet girls Meant that the boys dominated the discussions. They particularly enjoyed the Pictionary exercise and produced some thoughtful writing about their opinions on racism. Discussions veered off onto other -isms (sexism, ageism, sizism and homophobia) and some of these were really interesting. It’s a unit which would work as a beginning of year topic for Y7/8.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The stereotypes game was a real eye opener for the students and it made them realise how frequently and easily people stereotype each other. The students took real ownership over the action plan and what they felt was important to feature as goals and wor
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? I’ve probably referred to this a bit in the action plan but the awareness that spilled out beyond the classroom into the playground, other classes and some homes was flabbergasting. The students really saw me as a learner too as I shared personal experien
This was a well planned and resourced topic for teaching Years 5/6. It was well introduced and the sequence of teaching helpful to meeting outcomes and getting key teaching points across.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? This has prompted students to be aware of their language towards others and the power of words. To be mindful and have empathy towards others. To continue our ‘gratitude attitude’.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? The strengths based compliments lesson was very powerful. Students needed more support to do this than originally thought. We also linked this to a circle time lesson with how we feel when we receive compliments and how often we receive them. This popped
Students enjoyed the activities related to this kit, such as the circular family map intro. The colourful circles and cards for the ‘I wish my teacher knew’, were a hit and helped students engage. However, some of the activities didn’t flow onto the next ones that well. Great discussions had on stereotyping, with students creating very moving stereotype poems.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The action plans allowed me to seamlessly implement this school kit into my literacy program.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? This kit improved student relationships as they worked together on the different team activities and also discuss the turangawaiwai type activities.
The students really enjoyed the different activities in this school kit. Especially the team challenges such as where you had to draw different stereotypes. It was interesting and great to see not one child in my class had knowledge of any racist stereotypes. They also loved the pencils that came with the pack.

The content and set out of the kits were amazing, The kids loved it to and enjoyed the sterotypes game and giving out complements. The kid allowed for wonderful ways to open up discussions about difficult situations. It was age appropriate and it helped my class talk about issues such as sexism, steorotypes and racism. This kit was very worthwhile and think that it should be continued.
