What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The action plan model was an excellent model of how to set realistic goals and remain accountable. Most of our goals have focused on addressing how to interact with each other in a positive way that builds manaakitanga. The students enjoyed having a clear
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Emotional intelligence and empathy have been identified as areas in need of attention across the school. I feel that this kit provided me with a good starting point for exploring this need. I have gained a deeper insight into some areas in need of attenti
When we first started the kit I began to wonder whether it had been such a good idea to sign up my class of Year 2/3 students as I know the kit was designed for Year 3 upwards. Each activity took a great deal longer to complete, but was well worth the effort. The students engaged in some very thoughtful discussions on first impressions and how we make judgements about people we meet. It was very timely as we had a new student on the autistic spectrum start in our class part way through the term. (Unfortunately his stay was short lived and there were allegations made against the boy that led to quite a fall out - which only prolonged our time spent exploring this kit). The most significant insights I gained from completing this kit with my class were: 1. Racism and stereotyping are not natural reactions at this age. The best example of this came from the completion of the Pictionary game. Being a small rural school, our support staff are mainly parents and community members. When asked to draw a cleaner, they drew a lovely picture of our school cleaner, who also happens to be a parent of two children in the class. It took a great deal of discussion and the ability to look at things from a more general perspective to elicit the type of responses that one might expect. It was wonderful to be able to encourage students to continue to always try and see people as they are and not diminish them to a stereotype. 2. Students find it incredibly challenging to give and receive genuine compliments. We spent a great deal of time exploring this issue, and this became one of our main class goals. I had assumed that the children would be able to give compliments based on their knowledge of their classmates, but I was wrong - it did not come naturally or easily for them. We spent a lot of time discussing why this might be - especially since the children like to share news so often - however it became apparent that they (like many of us) hear what others are saying, but don’t really listen. It was a revelation to find that the children don’t know the likes and talents of their classmates as well as I had expected. This has led me to seriously ponder how I approach building a stronger sense of community and appreciation of one another in the classroom at the start of the new school year. In summary, this kit has provided us all with invaluable learning experiences and a deeper appreciation for the complexity of human interactions and relationships. Thank you for allowing us to participate in this learning experience!

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? I think it more supported learning that we were doing and made it not just history, but relevant today.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students are willing to speak up for injustices and have started advocating for themselves more, instead of just staying silent.
Was a great kit - teacher journal was also really good and challenged assumptions. Good connects to rewire - little book on bias. We were already focusing on NZ history and looking at ToW, Tribunal and Dawn Raids, so students were bringing in that learning too.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? It has made the students more aware of racism in New Zealand.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It did't really change the environment in the classroom as we continually talk about treating others fairly and with respect in our Religious Education programme.
The students were engaged in the activities and it provide them with more opportunity to openly discuss racism.

As per the other 2 kits, I have not been able to use them due to my inexperience in running a classroom, 1st year teacher. However, I will put them into my 2020 planning and will give feedback then. Thank you.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Surrounding environment is now more inviting and accepting and addresses all cultures!
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Riding the waka together!! And classroom displays to create a better 'feel ' within the room.
This was a great pack that allowed our students to address and confront quite a hefty topic, or which they wouldn't normally conversate. Although for some it was a bit of a 'hit home' process, it was transparent and honest.. It allowed for reflection on ourselves as individual, us as a class, us as a community, and our surrounding environment and what we implement to make things more accepting and inviting. There were, however, some topics that were skimmed over due to the sensitivity of the discussion and the relevance to some students in our classes.
