What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Our main focus was on stereotyping, and how negative this can be. We all do it, and children were able to talk about examples they've seen and heard from their whanau. We aim to stop negative stereotyping in our thinking, our talk, and our actions.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Our environment is a caring, respectful, safe and happy one, so there has been no change. The children loved the giving and receiving of compliments, though. Thank you!
Our class is predominantly Maori, with few other cultural backgrounds represented. We focused mainly on stereotyping, which we all tend to do. The compliments strips were well utilised and appreciated! Some of the content was challenging to implement.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The action plan allowed us a chance to really look and reflect on where we were as a classroom and how/what needed changing or focusing on.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? I think the most noticeable change was outside of the classroom, in the wider school environment and overhearing how they interacted and dealt with others in a social setting. It changed the way in which they discuss ideas and people and each other .... n
This was an amazing kit to help guide, identify and bring to light the 'hidden' and obvious racial undertones we have in NZ. It provided reflection for myself as a teacher as well as a way to talk about the subject of racism with my students. Would do it again in a heartbeat and have got many ideas to continue for the rest of the year.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Action plans? SMART Plans- we are more aware. we are accountable and we are collaboratively working on goals.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? My students already did but the praising of the strengths of others has to explode and the class is becoming more positive and full of acceptance. They are commenting more when others say comments that involve stereotypes.
This Kit was exactly what I needed for my class. I had started to hear comments like ";that's racist' even though the comment was nothing to do with racism. This kit helped me show my students how racism can be direct and indirect. They learnt that the way they stereotyped people from things they had seen on the news, comments family members had made and what they had seen online weren't actually representing a culture/group of people holistically.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Students began to hold me accountable.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Made students aware of the different cultures in the classroom.
Not part of my world kit was awesome to get students thinking about who is important to them and where we all come from. Students became more accepting of others. Unfortunately, this topic was very similar to another we had done previously in the year which meant it didn't have as much impact as intended. But if I was to redo either topic I would combine the ideas as lots of great activities to include in the classroom.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We have had a lot of sickness in the last few weeks so will be carrying on with this next term. The children were wanting to focus more on giving compliments based on character traits.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? The children are more aware of inward capabilities and strengths rather than physical appearance. We have learned to be more accepting of differences and understood that everyone has their own strengths and talents.
The children have loved talking and learning about stereotypes. We decided not to look further into difference ethnicities as the class are very inclusive of all races and I felt that it would actually cause more upset than good.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Giving the children more ownership of their own class and what was important
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We have seen an increase in children giving each other compliments and encouraging each other.
We enjoyed using the kit- it highlight underling issues in the classroom that we hadn't realised were there. Activities were well planned and easy to use and adapt to our level.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We are more tolerant and more accepting.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students are definitely thinking more about the actions of a person as opposed to the actions of a group or nation. They are tolerant and kinder than I think they were at the beginning of the school year.
A FANTASTIC resource that had my students really questioning the stereotypes and assumptions we make. After the March 15 attack my class became very very close (we are a Christchurch school), but underlying mutterings about how 'Australians are bad people because the gunman was an Australian' needed to be addressed and this kit did exactly that! One persons actions should not taint a nation or a group of people. Was great to be present for those 'lightbulb moments' and the pictionary was very interesting! Thank you School Kit!
