In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? Because of the circumstances this year I did not have the time to work through much of the teacher journal, so not really equipped to give feedback. From what I have seen it looked pretty solid.

How effective was the use of social Media for Fighting Social Injustice Mostly effective, our students are pretty tech literate and social media savy, so they had a strong understanding already of the use of hashtags and social media.

As a teacher you kind of assume that what you do is positive and good, but it is always important to take on the feedback of the stud

“Overall the kit was useful for creating a unit to challenge racism with our junior cohort. There was lots of great activities for challenging students ideas around racial prejudice, stereotypes, and racism, and really strong discussion flowed throughout lessons. The kit felt a bit short handed when it came to describing and discussing racism specifically. I felt teachers had to include a lot of their own mahi into this unit in order to create a more cohesive unit. Some of the language used in the activities took a fair bit of explaining as well, and we spent quite a few lessons simply explaining and getting students to understand the language and what it meant.”

In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? Didn't use the journal but can see it could be useful when looking at this topic more in depth.

“There are some amazing resources and links to some really interesting events. Some of the team found there to be too many resources without enough direction and just about gave up using the resource because it needed a lot of breaking down and working out how to link everything. I ended up using the Challenging posters with my yr 9 class and found they were great for research. They have introduced new ideas and perspectives and challenged the class - which has been great. They ended up working in groups and had to present what they found out at the end. Many of the resources will be able to be used with senior history and social studies in the future as well as both yr 9 and 10.”

In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? Some of the ideas about attacking racism require a bit more of a structural change at a higher level. I am going to try and do my part and continue reflecting on what I can change in my classroom and in my responses/interactions with students and whanau.

“I didn't get a chance to use the kit with students but I am going to enjoy reflecting on my experiences with the journal and incorporating them into my future teaching. Good PD for me!”

How effective was the use of social Media for Fighting Social Injustice some students liked the idea of social media, others not so much. Tiktok much more in vogue than Insta so missed the mark a little.
