In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? Creating the Instagram Stories asked them to look and see what they could do to make a difference. Also the work leading up to this, particularly the work on stereotypes and the podcast gave them historical contexts to reflect on and question.

How effective was the use of social Media for Fighting Social Injustice The students really enjoyed this part and were excited when outside people started following their instagram stories. They even DM'd some outside groups to see if they could promote their work.
In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? I have only had time to reflect on a few of the pages. I think the journal is very powerful but it should be sent out with the kit.
We completed this kit during Term 3 with 50 Year 9 students. It was frustrating that the teacher books were not included in the kits and these had to be sent seperatly. It was also frustrating that the first activity, the timeline with the washabi tape, was in the teacher book and there was no way to access this page without the teacher book. It made prep before starting the kit frustrating. Also not having the teacher book before going home for the school holidays before Term 3 meant I couldn't really do a lot of the reflective activities in the teacher book when I had time to do them. We didn't get the teacher journals until the we returned the first day of Term 3. The students were very engaged in parts of it. For the stereotypes picitionary I would add in a direction that they must draw people, otherwise they try and draw around the the stereotype so they don't look like they have a bias. They really enjoyed making the instagram pages at the end of the kit. With the instagram I got a lot of engagment in kids who normally do not do a lot of work in Social Studies. It would be helpful to have a bit more explanation on the instagram planning sheet. I am sure all teachers are not instagram savy, including myself and this would have been helpful. Not all year 9's are on instagram so they aren't as savy and asked questions about the planning sheet that I couldn't answer. There was a lot more prep needed to transition between the activities than the directions led you believe. Also it was difficult to find things on the website. This could be simplified. I was under the impression this kit was made by former teachers so I would have hoped they would have realised that making the website as userfriendly as possible would save us time and make us happy.

In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? Students worked in groups to investigate and explore the Challenges. How effective was the use of social Media for Fighting Social Injustice Instagram is blocked in our school and so students tended to just use google to retrieve information and to locate the links.
In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? I did not engage in this as much as I should have but it is a good way to consciously reflect on the way that we present ourselves and our ideas in the classroom. I think that sometimes I take for granted that students are aware of the issues facing varyi
Lots of useful teaching resources and ideas in the kit, which are useful not just in regards to the focus I took with Year 9 Socials. I used it with a Human Rights lense and the Challenging Racism in Aotearoa New Zealand was a realistic way for us to focus on present-day injustice facing people in our own community.

How effective was the use of social Media for Fighting Social Injustice We are yet to utilise the Social Media aspect. My class has just completed a unit on Government, Power and Influence and about to look at the Novel "Refugees". Students in Term 4 will consider and follow through on a social action based on their societal
In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? The Journal challenged me to consider the depth of my understandings and my confidence in opening up discussions with students. It led to researching the topics in depth before introducing to students. A very worthwhile tool in the resource kit.
An in depth exploration of racism leading to action. A resource that I will continue to incorporate in class work and discussions when considering both historic and current events that are influenced by racism and bias.

In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? It brought a global issue closer to home and students could understand that we have had our own issues here in New Zealand in the past and present. It gave them an idea of how they can contribute to a positive and inclusive society.

How effective was the use of social Media for Fighting Social Injustice It would have been even better if we had an uninterrupted term but what we got through was positive and I can see this working very well in the future. In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? It presented many of the arguments/challenges that are present around me and made me think of ways to respond to them instead of staying quiet.
This kit was excellent at preparing me as a teacher of a topic I had not previously taught. The relevant and interesting background content gave me a more complete history of racism in New Zealand so that I felt confident to address the issue. The student activities built on current events and issues that students were developing views and opinions on.

I really like the kit, but the lockdown put a spanner in the works and I did not get to use it with the students this term. It would have been exciting to see what my students got out of it if .....

In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? I used it for the basis of a wider unit looking at human rights, and we then focused on the development of Black civil rights in the USA in particular looking at Rosa Parks and then the Black Lives Matter movement.

How effective was the use of social Media for Fighting Social Injustice As mentioned above, the kit inspired a wider unit - particularly inspired me to explore with my class the development of the BLM movement.
In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? Even just reading through it, the journal made me think and questions a lot of my views/ideas. But I found it a little laborious and didn't complete it.
Initially I found the content of the box and the electronic 'how to' guide confusing and overwhelming. Once I'd sat down and worked through each part and looked at the corresponding resources I could see the progression through the unit. Going back into a covid lockdown affected my use of the kit though. I had planned to use it as part of a larger unit on human rights and we went into lockdown before we had a chance to start using the kit. I found it not that adaptable to how we were working online. Definitely a great resource to challenge ideas and beliefs, but wasn't what I was really looking to use with my class.
