In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? It was very confronting with the ways that I could be promoting or being complacent with racism/racist structures that exist within NZ society, but it helped me try and become a better teacher and person.
In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? It provided them ways that they could view and react towards racism, as well as different strategies to deal with them.

This was an interesting unit of work for our Y9 and 10s who were able to define racism, what it looks like and different ways that they could challenge racism and racist frameworks.

In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? This was my favourite part of the school kit. It genuinely challenged me to reflect on so many different aspects of my teaching. It is quite right that it is not enough to promote and use texts from various cultures in my class, I need to visibly and physically make my classroom a welcoming place where my students can see themselves represented on the walls.
In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? The two most common reactions to the resources were to be inspired to create performances about social injustice and also for students to feel more comfortable calling out casual racism that they encountered from their peers.

This is my first experience with School Kit. It exceeded my expectations in every way. The depth and breadth of the resources that were collated online and sent out were fantastic. I used these resources in multiple year levels, multiple classes and multiple units. Thank you for putting this together. It was immensely valuable.

In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? Due to the diverse nature of the classroom, it can especially challenging to ensure history is being taught from a range of perspectives, while not making any one student feel singled out by their culture / country’s history. I felt the journal was a great guide for supporting our department to initiate and encourage the conversations that were likely to arise, with confidence. It was also a good opportunity to reflect on our own cultural competencies, especially when you feel like you’re “ticking the right boxes”, the journal / action plan model helped to confront that a wee bit!
In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? The assessment tool was a brilliant way for the students to identify and potentially challenge racism that they were experiencing or responsible for (implicitly or explicitly) in a very non confrontational way. The stereotype Pictionary was particularly effective and would be a great addition to our year 9 course.

A wonderful kit to challenge students’ perceptions, to help them better understand their own country and the people in it. It also encourages teachers to challenge their current approaches in the classroom and support them to manage difficult conversations, which will (and should) arise from authentic teaching of real history.

In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? This is an ongoing conversation with students. There is a lot of learning and understanding they need to develop, and an ability to look at situations from others' points of view which takes maturity.

I used this kit at the beginning of the school year with a Year 9 class. We do a Challenging Racism unit of work in Years 9 and 10 every year. The students really enjoyed the pictionary-type game. It provided lots of opportunity for discussion. There will be other times within different units of work where this resource will be useful as well.

In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? As an immigrant, sometimes it was hard for me to relate to specific nz-centred issues. But it also brought others things to light that I may have taken for granted.
In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? They really had to think how they talk to each other and react online.

This unit was a great help to me in my new Yr 9/10 social studies class. They especially enjoyed the social media aspect. I liked all of the posters and the variety within each one, particularly for research opportunities. The kids *really* liked the (stereotypes) drawing activity. The feedback from them was really positive.

In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? Reading through the journal at the start and doing some of the tasks myself, like the implicit bias test, was quite confronting. It definitely helped me to approach the unit with care as we all have different lived experiences and unconscious bias and the
In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? Some students felt safe enough to share about their own experiences with racism and it helped us to examine closer to home. As a South Auckland school we looked at racism in Pukekohe, by watching No Māori Allowed, having a guest in to speak about their ex

I loved this kit, it gave such concise practical steps and wonderful resources. We were also studying protest songs in English this term, so was a beautiful link. It allowed student voice and agency and I enjoyed the range of activities provided. The kids really engaged with the stereotype pictionary game. The only thing I would do to improve this is to tell them at the start- no stick figures! I realised no stereotypes were showing while they were drawing stick people, but when I told them to draw real people, stereotypes abounded! The 'I wish my teacher knew' cards were quite disturbing in some cases, although I fronted it as being focussed on discrimination or an opportunity to share about their lives and cultures, it kind of became a confessional and a range of anonymous issues were presented that I couldn't do anything about. I would also encourage caution when doing the implicit bias test - teachers should have a look at the options before setting the task for the class. The global and local sheets were really good and helped a lot when doing the Instagram posts. We made this a group project and the kids had to use the sheets to explain to the rest of the class the issue examined on the poster. Then they had to work together to make IG posts related to the 9 tiles. They actually did this very well and it became the final assessment in google classroom. I made up a template on slides and the 9 themes had to be covered (I will add some photos of their work) They were very engaged and most of the final projects were of a high quality.

In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you? Made me reflect on and question my own bias.
In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism? It facilitated some meaningful discussions, and acted as a springboard for students to delve into their own area of inquiry where they could dig deeper and share/act on their learning.

I taught this with a Year 7/8 class. We were looking at the Aotearoa Histories curriculum as a school for the first time. Our big understanding was around how power has shaped the course of NZs history. This kit supported student learning and aligned perfectly with our big idea. The examples provided were highly engaging for the students and clearly showed how individuals/groups/organisations exert and contest power. This kit was great for opening up discussion and allowing students to look at their own perceptions and unconscious bias.
