How effective was this kit in connecting global examples of racism to the NZ context?
How much of an impact was the Teacher Journal in challenging your views or ideas?
In what ways did the Teacher Journal challenge you?
Due to the diverse nature of the classroom, it can especially challenging to ensure history is being taught from a range of perspectives, while not making any one student feel singled out by their culture / country’s history. I felt the journal was a great guide for supporting our department to initiate and encourage the conversations that were likely to arise, with confidence. It was also a good opportunity to reflect on our own cultural competencies, especially when you feel like you’re “ticking the right boxes”, the journal / action plan model helped to confront that a wee bit!
In what ways did this kit empower your students to challenge racism?
The assessment tool was a brilliant way for the students to identify and potentially challenge racism that they were experiencing or responsible for (implicitly or explicitly) in a very non confrontational way. The stereotype Pictionary was particularly effective and would be a great addition to our year 9 course.
