“Apologies for not corresponding sooner. I had planned to cover this My Self Confidence kit in term 2 however we had a particularly difficult situation to deal with that term, therefore I pushed it to term 3, and of course covid struck. I'm really hoping we return to the classroom next term and therefore complete the kit, as it's contents are perfect for the situation we find ourselves in.”

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? This isn't due to the kit, but due to the time factor involved in me working out how to use the kit effectively, and not actually having the time to do this.

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? Again, not because of the kit, but because I didn't have the time to work out how the kit worked, how to teach it and therefore didn't use it as it was intended.

“This kit looked fantastic, but unfortunetly I found understanding what was needed and how to teach it was difficult to follow and ultimately I didn't have the time to spend trying to work it out. I used the resources as a resource for my kids, who enjoyed being able to read the cards and have a space to express how they were feeling. The parents that did fill in the letter wrote really beautiful and significant things for their children.”

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? My class had a wonderful time doing this project. Before doing this unit, our class had a lot of type A personalities, however, a lot of very quiet students who didn't speak up for themselves. This set of activities definitely helped with this!

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? They are learning to be honest with themselves about their emotions and give themselves a better understanding of themselves.

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? It has been great so far. It has been useful to pick up on trends and be alerted to students who are able to hide their emotions well. It has provided an immediate starting point for communication. We will continue to use this kit to the end of the year.

“I started using this kit in Term Three. What an amazing resource! Very well thought out materials to form a strong foundation for students to recognise their emotions and use positive self-talk from the amber cards to help lift themselves out of that unhappy place. Students learn to help others through positive encouragement found on the green cards. The options on the red letters cover all possible options which makes this a suitable resource for schools in all areas and students in all schools. It has been a term of interruptions, therefore I will be using this kit with my class until the end of the year. We will do a Circle discussion of how the students have perceived this kit.”

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? I’m not sure this has improved as I have strong relationships with tamariki. It may have helped some of the less confident students.

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? I found this especially helped my high-needs students identify how they were feeling. The components in the kit helped us look at our responses to situations and how we can manage these in the future.

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? I found this kit really helped to develop Student-Teacher communication and it was a great way to build relationships with students while also giving them agency to check-in with themselves and me.

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? The portrait work and mental health conversations were very worthwhile and stimulated important thinking. The cards were excellent for giving key info on easy to understand and practical ways.

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? The booklets encouraged self reflection and the red battery notes are another way of expressing the student needs help or advice and is an excellent idea.

“This school kit was fantastic and was full of interesting and engaging activities which promoted excellent conversations with my students. It fitted in very well with our health programme and the school values. The students loved the booklets and wall battery checklist cards. I thought the portrait videos had real impact and stimulated key conversations about the falsehood of social media and negative thinking. Thank you so much!”
