“A lot was not appropriate for my class of year 4 students around the self esteem aspect to do with appearance. Loved the check in station and they use it regularly. Brought up great conversations around self assessing our feelings and being responsible for our own feelings as well as how to help others.”

How has this kit helped develop your student's self confidence? It definitely made them more aware of their confidence, and what/who affects their confidence. Perhaps building confidence for other classes, but mine seem to be reasonably good at sharing how they are feeling and managing their emotions without a system

“I'm not sure if it was what I was expecting. We currently have a check in system in place, and I was wanting the Self Esteem Kit to help build on this by providing more detail around emotions and self regulation when a student does need to check in. I, myself, found the kit easy to assemble and put up but many of it's part seemed to confuse the students as it was generalised who got what card when they checked in/charged/recharged which didn't necessarily fit the emotion the student was having at the time. Also for what seems like the first time ever, this class seems to be reasonably able in emotional regulation and nobody ever seemed to get to 'red' over the term - which was great, but not so much for the use of the kit. The students liked the visuals, they'd use the. vocabulary from the kit, e.g. 'being charged' and 'self-awareness'. They really enjoyed working through the booklets each afternoon, and we had a really great chat as a class about circles of influence. They had these conversations with parents at home about who influenced them as children, and were really interested to hear mine. I think if the check-ins were tailored to be more personal to the child, e.g. each child has an envelope with the green/red/orange card they would be able to have a more visual way of letting you know how you're feeling without necessarily coming up to you. This could also lend to other students seeing what card they are showing and 'charging them up'.”

How has this kit impacted your class community during covid times? Students have displayed more anxiety moving through into a new class. They are very resilient with a high needs learner in the class. All students have benefited from the discussion cards to open dialogue and share strategies.

“There were lots of great resources to use for a wall display and the support the learning of self esteem. We did not use the whole kit as there were so many interruptions with students away and changing timetables. What we did do was really helpful for the children to start to think about there feeling about themselves and others. It was great to use the cards at the beginning of the year but I will continue us to use and develop with my class.”

How has this kit helped develop your student's self confidence? Girls in particular are more confident at standing up for themselves and speaking out. However it has also helped many students have confidence in their ability to try new things/ learning at school.

How has this kit impacted your class community during covid times? Many students have become withdrawn, isolated and disengaged from school. We integrated the Dove Self Esteem kit as a springboard for out topic of Identity &; Influence this term and it has been very well received by our students.
