How successful has this kit been in building student confidence?
How effective were the components of this kit?
Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them
The letters - students were eager to return the love - back to the people who had sent them. The other comments that the children identified is that while working in maths (Currently learning through DMIC), children we helping each other to keep persisting in tasks - and although children joked with each other about the need to 'recharge' different children did go to the wall and read peers a card - and discussed it. This was all student led.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The letters offered the children the most impact. In our kura, each student had the letter completed by a teacher that they had previously had - possibly from 5 years prior. The children read the letters and many teachers had include little videos and photos from the early years for each student. This was done because I could not guarantee in our kura, that each child would get a letter back from family - so the teacher idea was highly effective and connected well with the circle of influence. We had students who cried and many wanted to share their letters with their peers afterwards. I have a video of children reading their letters - but wish I'd taken one afterwards when the children were sharing as there was a real buzz and excitement in the air. Many children wanted a letter template so they could write back to their teacher. In one photo you will notice a child laying on his back after reading letter. He got very emotional.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
That they are loved and that all people make mistakes, but it is through our mistakes, that we need people to walk beside us through these events. We discussed about people having our backs but it was being by our side that is the best support for our mistakes - as we can keep trying again knowing someone is also beside us to help and guide.
In what ways has this kit helped develop student confidence
They have started to see each other for the strengths that they bring to a situation - instead of what they cannot do. This has built the confidence of all learners - as they understand that they can work to their strengths and embrace the strengths of others to help them be successful. This in turn developed risk taking knowing that others 'had their backs'.
How successful has this kit been in building student resilisence?
How has this kit helped develop student resilience?
Similar to above, through a strength based focus, students knew others were relying on their strengths, and in turn others on theirs so tasks were (generally) tackled longer and students did encourage each other to stick with a task.
How high was student engagement throughout this kit?
What impact has this kit had on your classroom community?
Generally it has helped highlight that our differences should be celebrated and that fitting in should come down to acceptance - rather than being the same.
What impact has this kit had on your classroom community?
