This resource flowed on beautifully from our work in Sea Week, especially learning about Albatross and Whales. The children loved to learn about the early ocean explorers, the te reo and tikanga content was wonderful. Thank you again School Kit for another wonderful resource!

How did you find the open format of this kit? I found it intimidating to actually open and look at but once I did I found it very inspiring and loved that the kids were involved in choosing the direction we went in.

We really enjoyed this kit and used several of the elements. I can see that I will continue to be inspired by the kit and have used it in my planning for future terms as I can see how it links to many different themes that are coming up in our school.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? I haven't had the opportunity to use all the resources yet, but can see there are lots of opportunities for cross-curricular links. At this stage we haven't completed the tasks with links.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I like the format, and I love the extra resources on the website to support learning. I also like the ideas for how to use the kit on the website. This will enable me to differentiate the tasks for the different abilities in my class.

We haven't been able to use much of the kit at this point in time due to Covid and assessment constraints. However the parts we have used, the kids are loving and can't wait to do more (I have a year 3-4 class). The children have in particular loved the questions cards and have started asking each other would you rather questions in their own time developing lots of reasoning. They are also wanting to use the story dice all the time. They are amazing. For myself having read through the activities, I am really happy with the content, I have found some of the activities link really well with our school inquiry (Turangawaewae) as we are starting to look at being kaitiaki and our family stories that link us to our local area. Thank you so much for making this kit, I am excited to use it more in the coming weeks.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The Explorer Kit was a great resource for planning distance learning experiences over lockdown. I used the idea of story telling (Maori myths and legends in particular) as a starting point and planned a series of activities across the other curriculum.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I loved he open format of this kit. It allowed the students to have more input into direction of their learning. The 'big picture' card was very helpful as a guide for reviewing whether the activities that I had planned were truly covering all areas.

This kit is a superb resource. The items in the kit can be used in so many different ways and the students loved exploring the story map. This would often guide our learning journey, with students asking questions and wanting explore the different people, animals and objects that they could see on the map.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The counters were good for something different in maths. The would you rather cards were great motivations for our writing and oral language discussions.

This kit was really good for getting students to think about different things in the local area as well as what lies outside our community. We used the ‘Would you rather’ cards for writing, encouraging the kids to think deeply about the question. The resources were good but still a little advanced for our year 1/2 class so a little differentiation was needed as most of my students couldn’t read the cards etc independently.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I found the open format a bit more challenging to get my head around but on the flipside, it makes it easy to respond and delve into what the class finds most engaging.

This is an awesome kit that we will continue to use, as we haven't got the full potential with it yet with COVID interruptions.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The postcards that I sent home and the stories that came back with the students from their homes were just wonderful! We found the dice helpful to get us started and the small woven mat helped us with our Te Reo.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I enjoyed the open formatting of the kit. I feel it led to the resources being used in a variety of ways. We still use the dice when we are reading some of our big books and shared stories to help us with our comprehension. The students loved the dice.

We are discovering the story of our waka the Horouta and the people on board - their roles and dispositions and linking it to our learning dispositions. This kit fit beuatifuly within this as it supported the learning and then brought in another dimension of personal stories. I found having the community and families engaged in sharing thir own family stories strengthened home-school relationships - especially within the NE class where for many of our families it is the first time back into a school environment since leaving it themselves. We wove the topic into oral story telling, art, social sciences, geography (where are we from?) and reading and writing. Students "wrote thier family story and illustrated it and then it was displayed for others to read and share. Students retold the Horouta story providing illustrations using different art mediums and then used this learning to illustrate their own family stories. When we begin to sstudy Matariki this will again be a part of our prior learning as these constellations were used by different nations to travel and hold different meanings depending on the cultural context.
