What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Great mix of activities. Love the Exploring card with all activities easily seen.

How did you find the open format of this kit? It gives you a bit of choice but maybe too broad at times and maybe not sure where to start and head to next. Looking forward to using this with our planning for our return.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Lots of literacy with oral language/authentic writing opportunities Drama - being explorers (travellers/pirates LOL) Social Sciences - we are all different but we all belong

“Loved the dice and the huge range of resources. Loved that it could be taken across a range of ways and that I could share some ideas with the other junior teachers for them to use/modify. Was a great start to the year - exploring ourselves/diff/similarities and then moving into questionning and being 'investigators'. Was great as 'Being Courageous' is our school motto and so they were encouraged to be a courageous with their learning. Format of kit I enjoyed it as it meant I could take the learning where I wanted and I was able to share ideas with the rest of the junior team - that worked for me. This was used as part of our 'belonging' and building relationships focus for the beginning of the year. I used snippets of it. Lockdown ruined my plans but will use parts of it again during the year.”

How did you find the open format of this kit? I found it harder to know where to start and get started. I would have appreciated more suggestions on how to use the kit with steps and questions to provoke discussion with the class. As I am time poor I found I fumbled with knowing where to get started

“My class began this kit before lockdown so we didn't get far. We shared some stories together about exploring and made a class waka. The poster, poem and story dice were amazing. This kit would be a great kick start for the year and I thought a great analogy of learning, that we are all explorers of learning, off on our own journeys, but together in our waka. Thanks for the kit. Great resource to use again next year. Now I am familiar with it.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? I was really looking forward to doing some imaginative pieces of art with the way they wished to travel/explore places. There were lots of opportunities to do role play and drama through the stories that were recommended and some creative writing.

The only thing I struggled with initially was the content and relating it to the age and stage of my children in Year 0/1. “Due to my classroom being renovated and then Covid-19 my Year 0's and I were unable to make much of a start on the kit before lockdown. I did however, manage to get some of the recommended picture books out of the local library and read a few which they really enjoyed. We had discussions about where they would like to go exploring and what they would like to travel on but this didn't go any further. This is my first ever kit and I did struggle to begin with on how I could incorporate it into my NE classroom. I think once we had started ideas would have flowed. I was looking forward to doing some art pieces with the class and writing and role plays.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? tohora whales tied in nicely with sea week, writing, art, watching videos and investigating new vocab and comprehension, te reo as we learnt the tohora nui song, maps, maths in measurement and oral language as we often talked about it and became curious.

“We managed to do a few of the activities, but had planned for more. There were so many options in the kit, it was great. We especially liked the videos and the Te Reo on the poster. We also liked that the activities were cross-curricular. My year 0-1 class had lots of fun with it and were keen to explore more.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The children enjoyed the stories, they were not hooked into the activities as such and tended to go off on their own tangent. So we used the ideas in our talking circles.

How did you find the open format of this kit? It was ok for the Teacher's use, and I could plan for short teacher directed lessons, however for a junior kit a tactile hands-on resources would be preference.

“The idea of exploring and different journeys was a great hook. I felt the resources were very teacher driven though, the children couldn't use these independently in a task. I liked the idea of the STEM and tasks cards, however a lot of the ideas or characters they were to relate too were a bit abstract for my year 1's which made is difficult to gain traction prior to Covid.”

“Initially I was excited about the resources provided, then a little confused as to how I was going to use them. It required time to read through the online and offline material but then I became excited again. The book suggestions were fantastic - I was able to obtain most of them from the library and had started using them in class when we went into lockdown. The postcards were going to be used in week 9 and I intend to find a way to use them when we get back to "normal"school.”
