“The kit was beautiful and had lots of good deep learning activities, although we didn't have the opportunity to use it before lockdown. I felt it was a little too complex to add to our distance learning programme, although I may be able to adapt bits of it.”

How did you find the open format of this kit? Perfect. I used the kit how i needed to, and used the online resources if I had to. Again if I could see the kit through to the end, it would have been better, but what we got to use was awesome!

“The kit is a stunning and well put together resource, that can be used again for many topics. It was a great way to introduce Whanaungatanga within our class, as we always start our year this way. The fact it took an "Explorers"tact allowed us to really dig deep with identity, pepeha and go the migration route, using the kit. We only touched the surface of how we could have used this kit, but the possibilities were many, and I look forward to going back over what we did, looking at how it could have ended and reflecting on how I will re-use this kit again next year! What did we get to use? The kupu list were top! I do a kupu o te ra - Word of the day, and used this word list for that. The writing dice were awesome in our literacy activities. I could use them in my free write groups if tamariki were finding it hard to come up with ideas. The picture map was on our wall, and the children would have many discussions around it, especially the albatross and taniwha, as we talked about what taniwha meant to maori when they migrated as guides. the albatross in that sense too. The fact you referred to a bird as "koko"was a good talking point, as we say manu. I was coming back to from travels to introduce tanniko, but then lockdown happened so thats where we stopped!! Sorry this is a novel, but the kits are awesome if you have a plan that utilises the kit. Loved it!”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? I took the story of Kupe and found 3 videos on Youtube of Kupe's and the wheki. From this, we did drama, made a giant wheki and Kupe in his raft attacking the wheki. This led to maori art around wave patterns and floating and sinking (science).

How did you find the open format of this kit? I liked it. I thought an amazing amount of effort went into producing it. With older children it would have been brilliant.

“I feel very harsh rating this kit so low. It is because I teach 5 year olds. I think this kit would have been much more suited to year 3-4 students and then I would have rated it very effective. I did use the kit ideas for inspiration. See below under cross curricular learning.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Wow, in so many ways. The curriculum was cover through maths, they loved the pattern cards, literacy, they loved telling stories, the arts song and dance was a highlight for my children.

“We had just constructed our first big idea question at the start of our inquiry when the lockdown happened. My students were totally engaged in the work and I would have continued right through term 1 and onto term 2 as there was so many great lines of inquiry that I’m sure my students would hook into. We were about to see if we could visit the maritime museum but you would appreciate all is on hold now. We will definitely continue on once we get back to school. I’m sorry I didn’t take a photo of our wall display but I have attached a screenshot of our big question.”
