What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We loved the stories, especially the sea creatures - this is our fascination and interest it seems. We used our imagination through drama to be sea creatures, how they move, eat, what they would say, how they feel.

How did you find the open format of this kit? It did take me a little while to get my head round the fact that there was no right or wrong, and that the children's interests would dictate how far and the direction the investigation and conversation would go.

“We are loving our kit. Our school has more than 40 different ethnicities. We have been talking about what brought our family to NZ. For some it is poverty, war, racial, education, extended family, love. We have shared information about our different nationalities, how they differ and are the same. Our cultures and beliefs, the stories that we bring from our many cultures and religions. We loved thinking about sea life and why creatures choose to live where they do, and again it is the same reasons - food, habitat, predators. We are trying to transfer the knowledge we have gained into different situations and find that generally the reasons overlap. We had not had the opportunity to produce any art before school closed but we have had many discussions and dramatic opportunities.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? I really liked how the learning activities are cross-curricular. It helps us as teachers to integrate the resource into our class programme. It integrated art with maths and science. And rich literacy activities too.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I liked this aspect so that we could incorporate it into our already set topics. There was flexibility for us to be able to use it as we needed but there were also some good ideas to get us going and inspire us and our students.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? I loved that I was able to include so many different areas of the curriculum into each experience. The kids also loved it when we would be doing art and I would say that we had also done Math or Te Reo. It is a great way to cover the curriculum.

“My Year 1 class was excited to receive the Explorers pack and there were many aspects of the kit that they loved. However they did lose interest in it quickly. As we are a school that is Reggio inspired it meant I had to move on as their interest changed. Also as a beginning teacher I found it challenging not having more information to support me in how to teach the topic. A bit more of a teachers guide would be great or ideas on how to use the items.”

How did you find the open format of this kit? Definitely a negative. I really couldn’t put a handle on what I was supposed to do. Lots of bits and pieces and no clear direction. Not suitable for my young children.
