“We enjoyed this kit as a support to scaffold our inquiry into farming. It was unfortunate that lockdown ended our face to face inquiry. Children continued individual inquiry as part of their online learning. We were looking forward to the trip to a farm and would love to be able to be part of this if it was offered next year.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Some good questions that encouraged the kids to use much of the precise vocabulary they had learnt. Also used some questions as writing prompts. The art activity was perfect. Kids investigated two science activities related to planting of waterways.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I used parts of the resource that were closely connected to key ideas in From Grass to Glass. These were: A day on the Farm, Why farmers plant trees next to streams and waterways, Paint a farm of 100 greens, Ask great Questions. Prefer more direct format.

“The Farming kit was used by three year 3 classes. The design and content was suited to this level. I feel it would be less useful with younger children. Our main resource was Rosie's World and From Grass to Glass. The Farming kit supported cross curricular learning in oral language, written language, art and science. The poster was used to help reinforce use of new vocabulary. Our classes visited a local dairy farm and Dairy NZ arranged a milk tanker visit to take place while we were there.”

“The kit was simple to use in the classroom. The children thoroughly enjoyed it. We had hoped to incorporate a visit to the farm, but It wasn’t possible. Even without a real farm visit, the children learnt heaps!”

“Whilst we initially liked the look of the kit we were not able to implement much of it in a play based environment. We know for next time not to initiate interest unless we think we can incorporate it into play”

“This kit had a lot of benefits for the children of our area. We are a farming town and it was great to discuss areas of farming. We were upset that we didn't get to visit a local farm but that is something that couldn't be helped, due to covid 19.”
