“This is my first school kit and when I recieved the box it was like christmas! There was so much information contained and it was all high quality. At first I wasn't sure where to start but once a collegue directed me to the website where there were videos of ideas of how to use the kit and also suggestions from other teachers on the FB page I was away. I can see myself dipping in and out of the kit all year. We have now digressed away from the farming into the colour mixing. My class were absolutely fascinated by a field of a 100 greens, who doesn't love paint?!”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We teamed it up with some art, and I also believe the technology side of it for the children's inventive thinking was the best part. We read lots of farm related books so it crossed to english too. Also thanks for introducing us to a new Te Reo song.

“We joined our new entrant children with our year 1/2 children for this kit. We teamed up to do some of the activities in groups. The children were introduced into the unit by the fab videos on the website. This provided us with an amazing starting point of discussion. The children at our school are mostly from sheep and beef farms so it was great to look at dairy and fruit and veg etc. They so loved the ";thing, that, for"; cards. These produced some really inventive thinking from the children.”

Time constraints with recent events mean that we haven't used all components of the kit yet, will hopefully come back to it next term. Focus has been on oral language, retelling, art &; design. Children have enjoyed these activities.

“This was a fabulous resource that complimented our current learning focus on our community. Being a semi-rural school, it allowed for many of our students to become the experts on the 'Farming' topic and help to educate the rest of us about the different aspects in the kit. It provided lots of ideas, some that were tweaked to suit our learning environments and there was lots of room to move as far as learning activities went.”

“The circumstances around the country (and globally) meant that we did not get a chance to delve into this kit to the level we wanted to. We were very excited about the farm visit we had organised and the work that we did before lockdown but then it all went astray. The kit itself was wonderful! Lots of fantastic ideas and very practical suggestions for the classroom. The links on the website were very useful and we started there with stories and podcasts. I can only imagine how fantastic it would have been if we had been able to use it to its full capacity.”

“A great kit which unfortunately I haven't had a chance to use to it's full potential yet. This week I have trialled using some of the Would You Rather cards as our oral language, the students are designing their own farm as an independent activity and we are also looking at the thing, that, for activitiy as another design task in class. The only issue I have had is trying to incprporate it into my teaching when our priority shifted after going into lock down. It has also been difficult being the only member of my team using the kit so I am trying to use the farm kit as well as completing our other term topic.”

“Farming is a great topic for our rural school area. Although we have only had a little time so far to investigate the kit as a class we have enjoyed the stories and open ended opportunities for learning. As this year our school is focusing on discovery is has flowed on well from other learning earlier in the year of growing a bean plant, going to on a trip to Orana Park in Christchurch, talking about animals and their habitats then moving onto those animals and life on a farm. This kit has provided the children plenty of opportunities to discover and gain understanding in a variety of subject areas. Great with the high use of oral language.”
