“Hi, thank you for providing us with the farming kit. I used it with my 0-3 aged children. They really enjoyed the activity where they got to invent something to fit the specific requirements. We painted the green fields and drew all of the animals that we know are on a farm. The videos provided were great and we looked forward to a visit to a local farm. This did not happen due to Covid 19. My students are mostly from an immigrant background and live in a heavily populated part of our city. They do not have the opportunity to experience rural New Zealand. I extended the unit by taking them 'vegetable farming.' We dug for yams, cleaned them and replanted the small ones. We then cooked and ate them. We also dried pumpkin seeds after making pumpkin soup so that we would have seeds for the upcoming spring. We tasted pumpkin seeds which they loved. We did have one student add these to him lunch box. The experience I gave them for sheep was to watch sheep shearing on the internet and then to make our own felt using carded wool. My intention what to try and give the students an understanding and experience of where our food and products come from. In my professional opinion the kite was in some ways suitable but required a lot of alterations for my young immigrant students to gain value from. The 'game' was not appropriate for the age and inexperiecne of my students.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The Art lesson was fantastic,, children enjoyed experimenting with the different shades of green. We do DMIC math and we used the farming context for our questions . Te Reo , literacy were covered and making lego machinery was loved.
