What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? This lead us down the path of technology where we could design of our own machines. Lost of opportunities for discussion and brought a lot of language. It was also great to hear students bring their own ideas from their cultures and experiences.

We read lots of farm stories and tied in our art lessons and created some very abstract farm animals for the farms we designed. Unfortunately our farm trip was cancelled due to Covid -19 so we did not get to explore a working farm.”

“As the start of the year has been very mucky, we did not get to use the kit to the full potential. However ,we did love many of the tasks that were included in the kit. Our children learnt how to mix colours to make green and produced landscape art (being a rural school they had the opportunity to look out in the horizon to support this task). Our students took on the Thing + That + For challenge which was wonderful to see how they worked as a team and what they came up with. They also enjoyed creating farms with the resources we already had in our classroom. We read stories and listened to the music. This kit also inspired us to complete an observational drawing of a tractor (kindly brought in by a parent), along with a descriptive writing piece to go with. The engagement levels were high for our children who live on farms, and our town students learnt lots of new things from their peers.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We used the dice for writing motivation and oral language discussion. At this age level some children were able to use their imagination to think about a design, but for others the concept was very abstract.

“I teach a class of year one students and I found that many of the items in the farming kit were a little bit abstract for them to understand. I think that the visit to the farm would have engaged the children in the farming process and they would have learnt a lot more having the practical experience. We managed to invite a dairy farmer into our classroom and they shared photos of their farm.”
