The Farming Kit Reviews

4.2 Rating 339 Reviews
What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The cross curricular aspects really were what you made them! We used science, a load of writing, reading on farming aspects, art, and technology both on devices and solving a farming problem in our makerspace.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I like the open format of the kit as I tend to go off on tangents in most things! I like my class to be able to go in a direction that interests them - which they did!

Another great kit! I didn't know how my class would receive it as we are a rural school but they were really engaged and focused and could relate to what was around us. It was a great lead in to our calf club preparation. Lockdown sort of broke it up so I didn't get through as much as I had hoped but we will continue to do bits and pieces over the course of the year. Thanks!!

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The links and resources that could be used alongside the different aspects was great. I used this through lockdown and the parents could find these links too.

How did you find the open format of this kit? It was quote open - I like more of a directed kit but it was easy enough to follow to do to a plan

A great resource that was well linked with curriculum strands and allowed to go deeper into concepts. I loved the other resource links such as the videos. We are a rural school but it was applicable to the children in my class who lived on a farm and those who lived in town. It was very user friendly!

How did you find the open format of this kit? It was great that it could be interpreted and used differently. This allowed for students to engage with it in different ways and provide their own thinking on how it could be used.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Mathematics using problem-solving, calculating how many cartons of milk one cow fills from the milk in schools. Writing to explain the process of Grass to Glass, I used a comic strip type format, printed out the pictures and students used these to retell

Excellent well resourced kit. I found this kit easier to follow because of the list of activities that were included with the kit and on the website. The students loved the 'Thing + that + for' acitivity and the Grass to glass activity. A wonderful resource for Year 3 students.

How did you find the open format of this kit? Having not used the kits before I was a bit confused on my first viewing about how all the bits and bobs were going to work out. Once my colleague and I studied the various elements in the kit in more detail, we were able to formulate a plan.

A colleague and I were going to work together on this project during weeks 7-10 of Term 1. We had begun the introductions with the map and picture cards, watched some of the video links and read one of the fictional books. We had a visit to a Goat Farm arranged for March 26 and were going to do some of the follow up activities, culminating with the children creating their own farm models in teams. As schools were shut on March 23 at 3pm, we have been unable to follow this through. As our Term 3 Topic does not fit in with the kit, we will not be able to use it. However, we plan to store it until the next opportunity to use it arises as we felt that the resources provided a range of interesting ways to look into farming in New Zealand. Our local community has a lot of farming families, so the topic was of great relevance to us. Had we been able to complete the activities we would have done a lot of oral language and writing about our farm visit and using the ";would you rather"; cards. The story book was going to provide an opportunity for setting up ";Play, Make, Create"; activities, we would have made butter for a cooking activity and we had planned to do some some role play/drama. We had earmarked some guided readers with a farming theme for as many of our groups as we could, using PM and Ready to Read books. We were looking at mixing primary colours for art and had planned to mix a range of greens for our farm models.

How did you find the open format of this kit? We were able to take aspects of the kit and tailor-make a programme of inquiry that followed our particular interests. We are a very boy-heavy class, so the kit was ideal for them!

We enjoyed learning about farming, especially as many of the students have never set foot on a farm. We worked in cooperative group to plan our own farms, and had fun presenting our ideas to one another. Unfortunately Covid 19 disrupted our learning, but we were able to pick it back up when we returned to school. Many thanks to the sponsors.
