How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? They saw just how much food waste is happening in our community and we touched on what it must be like for the rest of NZ and the wider world. It would have been good to have linked it per capita.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Having cooking classes for families with recipes for leftovers, easy recipes using everyday ingredients. Have a whiteboard on the fridge or near it with what food is in the fridge so you don't keep buying more or have a whiteboard with the menu and ingredients for dinner each night so you only purchase and use what you need.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? They became more aware of the community gardens and this was prompted by our mapped out local area and our walk around the area.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are looking at having an edible garden that students can grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs to take home and use or to make soups in the winter.
Our school is in the middle of town and the students realised that there were many food suppliers that would have food waste. This included two supermarkets, many takeout places, fruit & vegetable grocers, the Warehouse, restaurants, etc. The students were engaged in finding the food waste heroes and came up with specific criteria to identify the winners. Our local council has recently started a food waste collection and this helped students to look closely into food waste at home as well.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? as a new sub division there is a lack of grocery stores, yet we live on fertile land that was used for farming previously.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? we are discussing how we can build interest in our school gardens by adopting a plot.
An excellent kit that allowed our students to have a greater understanding of where our food comes from and how we can have a healthy relationship with food.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Just the amount of food sources there were.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Making a pataka kai for our school. We donated some of our pickles!
Great resource to use with our Footprints of Social Action unit. We had been talking about Food Waste and ways to reduce it so it was a nice surprise to have the pickling recipe and ingredients included within the kit. We made a map of the different food vendors around the community and although we didn't get to meet or visit any of our food heroes and do the 60 minute circle walk poem, there were some really robust discussion on the different food sources in our community.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? They hadn't considered waste from home garden.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Not at this time of year.
Our five-class intermediate school team decided to collaborate on a project using the School Kit, working together with our 136 learners. Each kaiako in the team received a kit, and we utilised the detailed plan to rotate our students through the various engaging learning experiences it offered. We completed our circle poems outdoors, under the trees at school, following a walk and some lively group brainstorming sessions. The Good Food Map activity was particularly revealing, highlighting how many of our students were unaware of the resources available in our local area. It also shed light on their limited knowledge of food waste and local food heroes, such as Nourished for Nil. This sparked curiosity and ultimately led to a full-scale inquiry as students explored the causes and effects of food waste and identified practical actions they could take at home, school, or even on a global scale to mitigate these impacts. Unfortunately, our plan to use the school’s food room for a cooking session—making pickles or soup—was disrupted due to technology catch-ups beyond our control. With no alternative dates available, we could not complete this part of the project, however learners came up with other ways to use food waste or design food solutions.
