What are three words that describe the activities in this kit?
engaging, thought-provoking, innovative
How effective was the resource in fostering critical thinking about food waste issues?
How effective was the resource in increasing students’ awareness of local sources of food?
How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue?
They saw just how much food waste is happening in our community and we touched on what it must be like for the rest of NZ and the wider world. It would have been good to have linked it per capita.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions?
Having cooking classes for families with recipes for leftovers, easy recipes using everyday ingredients. Have a whiteboard on the fridge or near it with what food is in the fridge so you don't keep buying more or have a whiteboard with the menu and ingredients for dinner each night so you only purchase and use what you need.
Did the resource encourage new ways of thinking and talking about the value food?
What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery?
They became more aware of the community gardens and this was prompted by our mapped out local area and our walk around the area.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school?
We are looking at having an edible garden that students can grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs to take home and use or to make soups in the winter.
