What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? They hadn't considered waste from home garden.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Not at this time of year.
Our five-class intermediate school team decided to collaborate on a project using the School Kit, working together with our 136 learners. Each kaiako in the team received a kit, and we utilised the detailed plan to rotate our students through the various engaging learning experiences it offered. We completed our circle poems outdoors, under the trees at school, following a walk and some lively group brainstorming sessions. The Good Food Map activity was particularly revealing, highlighting how many of our students were unaware of the resources available in our local area. It also shed light on their limited knowledge of food waste and local food heroes, such as Nourished for Nil. This sparked curiosity and ultimately led to a full-scale inquiry as students explored the causes and effects of food waste and identified practical actions they could take at home, school, or even on a global scale to mitigate these impacts. Unfortunately, our plan to use the school’s food room for a cooking session—making pickles or soup—was disrupted due to technology catch-ups beyond our control. With no alternative dates available, we could not complete this part of the project, however learners came up with other ways to use food waste or design food solutions.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? The local cafes, how many people actuallly grow their own food and the creative ways people do eg bags of compost having vegetable seedlings planted directly into it.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? No- just to keep the vege garden more tidy!
Excellent box to use. It fitted in what we were doing - focussing on fitness - and the food box helped add a different, interesting dimension. It really helped us know our local area and we all learnt something new about where we lived. The activities are always different to those we would normally do in the class .

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? 'Food ghost' and smaller industries like home kitchens that produce items to sell - cookies, deserts etc.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are requesting a Pataka Kai from our board of trustees
Our Y4's looked at our local map and discovered where there were food related spaces/shops and available food to the community. We loved finding our known spaces and discussed what happens to waste. We had a visit from 'Food for thought' and discussed making nutritional choices. We designed a Pataka Kai for our local area to reduce food waste. Our 4Square helped us do some maths.

We began this project by creating good memories and discussing least favorite moments, which led to meaningful conversations about the children’s future plans for improving the environment as they grow up. Lunchboxes were checked by kaitiaki monitors, and we were fortunate to have the Auckland Council Food Scrap Bin Promotion Team visit our school. Although the busyness of the final term limited how deeply we could explore the topic, the children enjoyed the lessons and took pride in educating their families.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? No. Unfair to comment. But,our school does have chickens. Food wrapping is a big issue.
Badly timed on my behalf. In term 2 or three this could have been much better. I did not get into it as assesment took a front seat. Walking around our country neighbourhood would be a bigger undertaking than the author considered. Too much health & safety red tape for the farms.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? There were a lot of market gardens and they learnt how they provide free food for all their workers. They also had to ask local businesses to source some food which could be preserved. This was fun.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Yes
This was the first time I have used one of these resources so it was hard to navigate. I found it was a good starting point but many of the resources didnt suit our environment. I was able to change and adapt things. It was also hard as the structure of the school didnt allow for enough time to get activities completed. (This is not a reflection on the kit)

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Noticing the amount of fruit trees. Using a map of the local area and going for walks on the little side streets.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? As we only started this project in Term 4 the students came up with this idea for next year. People to bring in any excess food they have growing in their gardens that the students can use to make preserves with. This can be then given away to local food banks.
I work with year 11 &12 learning support students with varying learning needs. Our class volunteers at a local community garden and this resource complimented our lesson well. We were able to use produce from our community garden and school garden to use in the activities. The activies also made the students more aware of where food comes from and how much food there is in our local community.
