Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Yes- pickling our excess food and how other cultures use this method.
We really enjoyed Good Food Map. The kids and I loved finding out about what food was in our area and different edible gardens. We tried pickling food and are getting ready to try it!

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? They understood that food waste is not just something that happens in their lunchboxes but is part of a much bigger global issue involving energy, transport, and resources.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Using ugly and old looking fruit to make muesli bars. Great idea using a fruit dehydrator and using the old fruit to make something that could keep for longer.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Many of our international students were not aware that you could grow fruit and veges locally in a container as small as a bucket (tomatoes, potatoes). Many of them thought you needed a whole farm.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Small garden club that makes soup to be frozen for the kids that forget their lunch in winter.
Our students loved the Good Food Map kit! It was hands-on, visually engaging, and sparked rich discussions about where our kai comes from. We used it as a cross-curricular inquiry across science, health, and social studies — it really brought learning to life. A real highlight was seeing kids link their lunchboxes to local food regions, which also led to great kōrero with whānau about traditional kai and sustainability. The resources are super teacher-friendly and adaptable. Highly recommend for any school wanting fun, meaningful, Aotearoa-based learning.

We really liked how engaging and practical this school kit was. The writing activity was a great launch and the children enjoyed making their maps, questioning the school community and finding about food and helped us think deeply about shopping locally and supporting local businesses when possible. We loved being creative with our vegetables and fruit. I think I would do this school kit later on in the year as the first term meant we were very pushed for time and I would have liked to spend more time on this with my class.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? That there are a number of people in the community who grow their own produce
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Absolutely! We now have a compost and the start of a 'garden to table' program
The children enjoyed using these resources and as a team we found the posters helpful to use around the classroom. We used this resource as part of our unit looking at sustainability and creating our own school worm farm and compost unit. Then used the soil to start to grow our own vegetables and herbs. We were able to use some of the recipes from the kit to incorporate the things we had grown ourselves.

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? The numbers really made us wonder. How can people be hunger when we waste so much
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? We already use the waste to feed our animals, but some students wondered if they only feed certain scrap types to the animals to potentially flavour the pork.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Yes, we thought more about the ability to share. Hunting families trading meat for those that had too much in the garden. Also the berry farms about hadn't been mentioned often.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are shopping the pantry and chosing recipes based on in season options, also what can we bulk buy and section up for future use.
This was a fantastic activity to incorporate and then build student knowledge. We used the amazing resources both within the kit as well as in our community. It allowed for robust discussions especially with the current cost of living effecting many families. Our local families are literally hunters and gatherers so we could talk about our local impact adn how we could help others. All around we loved the kit and will be using it frequently with my other Food Technology classes.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? This kit will lead onto the creation of a new school/community garden on school grounds
We had to adapt many of the activities in the kit to suit our very small rural community. However, the learning was engaging for the students and we learnt a bit more about many aspects related to food. This new knowledge will flow through to other upcoming projects the students will be taking part in.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? This too is ongoing as we have looked at our recycling and next term will focus on the huge wastage created by compass group school lunches
I am still in the process of using all of the resources. The students have loved the activities we have done so far and are keen to signup for more Term 2. I am at an intermediate so afternoon classes are extra curricular and optional. Its a good sign that Term 1 students are wanting more!
