What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? we didn't get out for walk in our area but would like to.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? yes - a whole deep dive.
The school kit provided a valuable resource for exploring food systems, sustainability, and whānau food traditions. Despite time constraints and competing priorities within the classroom and wider school schedule, we were able to successfully engage with several key components of the kit. Strengths of the Kit Relevance: The kit encouraged students to analyze their local environment, fostering a strong connection to their community and food sources. Interactive Learning: Activities like analyzing food sources, identifying wastage, and exploring whānau food memories were engaging and sparked meaningful discussions. Adaptability: The materials allowed us to prioritize parts of the kit that fit into our current curriculum while planning to revisit other sections in the future. Challenges Time Constraints: The scope of the kit required more time than was available within our timetable, limiting our ability to fully complete all activities. Integration with Other Subjects: Balancing this project with other classroom priorities was challenging, highlighting a need for greater alignment with broader school goals. Plans for Future Use We plan to extend the use of the kit into 2025, focusing on the remaining activities, particularly those related to growing our own food. This will provide an opportunity to deepen students' understanding of sustainability and self-sufficiency.

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? They were thinking about how factories can throw out food/ingredients when they are processing, and the amount of waste due the expiry date. We looked at businesses that collect food for the poor, pig farmers to help reduce waste.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? The best is knowing how to cook their own packaged food, eg muesli bars and how they thought these tasted a lot better than the store bought. This helps to eliminate a) packaging waste and b) food waste if they don't like it.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? The food forests. They didn't know these were open to the public. A couple of other community areas also have areas for people to donate food grown in their garden, passing onto others.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? The importance of food technology and knowing where food comes from and how they can produce/create their own.
This is good for winter time as the food technology of pickling and soup will be great to finish the vegetables grown in the garden. We did this in term 4 and the winter vegetables were not in the garden and had to purchase. It was a kit to support our learning of where food comes from and how food is processed and how we can reduce food waste.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are more engaged in developing our garden to table space, and are looking and putting in a kitchen space in our community garden.
A wonderful unit on local produce and supporting our local growers. This is important in our community as we have orchards, dairy farms, and sheep and cattle farms local to our school.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Students considered all ready the methods of food waste and making sure that they are reflecting on the food they waste (our school has our food scraps go to pigs)
Lots of great resources, stimulated discussion and ideas. The level of community engagement and organisation was a little much (maybe that is just term 4 speaking).

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are working on our garden skills and now have a community garden as part of another programme which we could support.
We had an amazing time engaging with activities that brought smiles to the students' faces and provided an interesting perspective on our local community through the lens of food. The pickling vegetables workshop was a highlight—hands-on, fun, and a great way to teach about sustainability and preserving food. Creating the map of our food journey added a creative and interactive element that everyone enjoyed. The 60-minute walk poem was a unique activity, blending mindfulness with creative expression, and the students loved exploring their environment while crafting their verses. It was a fantastic blend of education, creativity, and community connection!

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? The organic business in our area.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are an enviro school and this reinforced our recycling practices.
We stated off by giving our Inquiry a sustainable living focus. Our school was holding a sustainable market day so this was a great opportunity for us to explore how we could produce a sustainable product to sell. The students were in groups of 3-4 and had steps to follow: *Choosing a product *Costing it's viability *Presenting as a sales pitch for the class *Producing and marketing the product *Selling the product We raised nearly $700 which we used for an end of year trip. It covereed all curriculum areas and afterwards we completed a review for future production. We also got to look at what and how the Hororwhenua produces food products. Some students were unaware of what there is operating in our area. As part of our explanation writing this lead onto Climate Change and useing resources wisely for our future. e.g.recycling. This topic had many spin off's. Designing pamphlets advertising things to try in our area, writing rap song poems about our place and capturing the Horowhenua for Art. It was a great motivation for further Inquiry.
