“This has been a wonderful unit to use with my Year 5 and 6 class. Lots of opportunities to explore beyond the kit.
The 6 degrees of separation was an eye opening part of the unit and the students loved trying to make connections with random names throughout the world.”
What were some of the values that the people your students interviewed talked about?
They were able to link in and connect with our school values which are widely promoted throughout our school community.
“This kit fit beautifully within our Shaping Our Future theme and engaged most students (Year 7 class). It was a great opportunity for collaborative reading and writing which the students enjoyed sharing the stories from the letters. We interviewed staff members of our large school, who also grew up on the farm. Unfortunately due to large events such as Aims Games, Cross Country, as well as winter tournaments and cultural festivals we were unable to complete it fully before the end of term.”
What were some of the values that the people your students interviewed talked about?
We found that our school values were very similar to those mentioned by the people we interviewed, especially challenge and collaboration.
“Another awesome kit, Thanks School Kit! We started ours later then we had hoped to. Loved the range of activities and learning about VIP New Zealanders who have ties to a farm. Even though we are a city school in Auckland we found lots of our own ties to farms.”
What were some of the values that the people your students interviewed talked about?
Work hard, follow your dreams, be kind to nature, family are important
“A great kit. We started with exploring photo stories etc to do with farming and that sparked an interest. The children enjoyed reading the letters and found it a good challenge to work out what the interview questions were. We made a list of values from the letters and compared it to our own. Most children were able to complete an interview at home but we did find that the interview questions didn't match exactly those on the publishing sheets which made it a bit confusing. The part my children enjoyed the most was making a farm display from the materials provided in the kit. They had so much fun doing this and were really creative.”
What were some of the values that the people your students interviewed talked about?
Hardworking, respect for the environment, responsibility, reliability.
“My class loved the letters from New Zealanders. Especially the ones that had funny stories of experiences on farms they could relate to. The worksheets on dairy food, how a cow works, etc had great links across the curriculum.”
“Please refer to Matt Wynne's email- as he did the syndicate survey for everyone- however in this email we have added some visual attachments from us.”

“These comments are from Year 7/8 Syndicate - five classes.
The Kits were relevant and appropriate to our age group (Yr 7&;8). The resources (letters) were of interest to the students.”
“It was really exciting to receive so many letters from so many VIP New Zealanders that were bought up on farms. The children really enjoyed using Google forms to make surveys and interview people about their connections to farms. The part that we enjoyed discovering the most was how many values that were learned on the farm they were bought up on and still played an important role in their lives. The posters and resource materials were brilliant. They made a great display. Thanks for a great learning opportunity.”
