How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? The kit reinforced to ue the benefit of having hands on thinking activities integrated in our literacy programme.

“We used the Jean Batten kit as a jumping off point for our terms literacy programme. It was very engaging for students who really enjoyed the hands on activities alongside the writing programme that we developed to support the kit. This kit was of particular interest to boys and this is always a bonus in literacy. Unfortunately the covid lockdown in Auckland cut our programme short, however we will be completing it in term 4 when we return to school.”

How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? Yes, after the kit I have taught naval flags to another group of learners who find learning difficult because of the engagement and thinking component.

“I originally ordered the Jean Batten kit for my whole class but changed it to a group of 8 (literacy group) because I found that I wanted to push the problem solving/code cracking skills with a smaller group, rather than a larger one, so I could manage it more effectively. This worked and I was able to support the group during their guided learning sessions. They were successful with my support and the teacher guide, otherwise some of the code cracking activities may have been too difficult or caused frustration with the group. The group enjoyed the challenges with the correct amount of teacher support. They felt proud of their work and kept a modelling book with all of their learning. At the end of the learning the whole class took part in the thunder storm and the buzz planes to feel a connection to what the literacy group had been doing.”
