Discussion of what had to be folded, tested and tried again to achieve the goal of either precision, distance and accuracy. Solving the various clues by cracking the codes to the semaphore and listening carefully to the morse code.

“Used the kit with my Year 4 class. There was a lot of engagement when doing the activities as they loved to try to solve clues. It was great to get a variety of codes to try and decipher. The paper plane and Mayday activities were a hit too. Lots of different variations of paper planes with lots of trial and error. Good discussion took place regarding the various paper plane designs and working as a team for Mayday. It was great to learn more about Jean Batten's life too.”

At the time we completed this kit, we were learning about rockets and areodynamics etc. Some students studied how aircrafts developed through the years and were keen to find out the advancements in flight. Some studets were inspired by Jean Batten's story

“I decided to set up pre activities so that students learnt a bit more about Jean Batten so it ended up running over a couple of days. They were very impressed about what Jean Batten achieved and were quite suprised by how she died. The students liked the hands on activities but found the morse code a bit challenging. They enjoyed making the paper planes and the buzz planes. What I would've liked to have done was set up a box that the students sat in that was the dimensions of the Moth and the Gull so they could feel the limitations of space Jean and other pilots experienced but couldn't find that information anywhere.”
