How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? It was great to see the children working together to make things and it improved my teaching skills as I worked on the acitivies before them - this made me confident in my ability to teach them what they may need to do.

“This kit was great for developing the children's understanding of NZ history, Jean Batten, Aviation and looking into problem-solving skills while making devices to do with flying. It was interesting to listen to their beliefs of women and their role in NZ history - a lot had no idea of the impacts women have had on our history. It was interesting to learn that the only famous women they knew of were our current Prime Minister and the opposition leader. Map reading skills were developed as well as a sense of other countries and the distance to travel around the world. It was fantastic to listen to the children and their avid interest in the difference between travel over the years and how keen they were to look at the differences between planes over the years!!! Really valued this kit as the children's interest in our history and the different ways to con-struct a plane/travel was awesome - loved their co-operative skills.”

“This is an amazing kit, with lots of variety and interesting activities. I have a Y4/5 class and they did need a lot of support to complete the tasks, older students would be able to be more independent though.”

In what ways did the kit allow development of strategic thinking for your students? Trying to crack the telegrams and understand the morse code - these parts of the kit definitely challenged the class and got them to do some thinking about how it works.

In what ways did the kit allow development of strategic thinking for your students? With the code breaking, telegrams and puzzles to solve there was lots of opportunities for them to think strategically. It definitely provided a challenge for some of the students.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We extended this by looking at and celebrating famous New Zealanders. Originally before lockdown this was going to be part of our explorers unit so we were looking at different modes of transport and famous explorers around the world.

How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? It definitely helps as having the materials and instructions there on hand makes it so much more achievable and accessible.

“Overall the kit was really good - so many cool activities that the kids enjoyed like the code breaking, plane flying and buzz plane making. I completed this with the whole class so they only thing I would suggest for a big group would be more of the hands on materials like he buzz plane making. It was quite a big group of kids trying to make one small thing so people got left out or didn't quite get a turn. I photocopied some of the other items so there would be more materials for them to work in smaller groups which went well.”

How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? Having the tools and instructions as a base was great. The class then built on what they took from the kit and made some neat flying objects which posed further questions surrounding materials and shape.

“The JB kit was amazing. The problem solving surrounding flight, plane and her route saw deep thinking and discussions. Being able to look back in time and compare the differences between then and opened our history eyes. The little box of her items was a great hands on discussion point.”
