In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Some of the students had never tasted or heard of the vegetables and fruits and were making connections to fruit and vegetables they had seen in the supermarket with their whanau which made it a home school partnership
Once again, the school kit squad delivered a well timed and considered kit to inspire and motivate students and teachers , our students were hooked from the beginning, the seeds and the opportunity to be part of a growing garden to table programme was something that captivated them from the start.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Maths - Kids were able to measure the growing plants every couple of days then determine the changes in size. Health - Having vegies as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Art - Drawing and taking photos of their plants. Using their vegie as another '
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Science - Where vegies are grown. How plants grow. What they need to thrive. A general wanting to know more about vegies (were the first carrots really purple?!!). Science / Social sciences - How our actions/activities affect the plant and environment. H
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The focus on vegies as a healthy part of their diet.... they had to design a day's menu ensuring that there was a healthy aspect to each meal. I had the 'eat your colours' idea incorporated into this idea.
Due to Covid, the seeds were sent home as part of an ongoing project of learning at home. The kids planted the seeds then kept a log of photos, information, queries, etc that could be electronically communicated with me and peers. Although was not the best option in regards to using the kit, those kids who participated enjoyed watching their efforts 'sprout' and grow. Specified questions that I asked had the kids looking at different aspects in respect to the vegetables and herbs. I would certainly like to use this kit again but in a more controlled learning environment.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This class participates with an 'inschool' model of garden to table, so there are regular opportunities to include recipes, food tech, garden experiences throughout the year.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Making vege muffins - some to eat, some to share with whanau, some to put in the freezer, for those days when someone needs more food for the day. This meets our school values of caring for others.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? There was plenty of discussions about the various seeds, uses in recipes, flavours, experiences of growing and eating. Children eat a variety of fruit and veges at brain break time (if possible). There is often subtle pressure from peers to have a fruit o
The class were very excited to have the kit, and set it up. There was a delay as we had other curricular and school wide events that needed to happen first! Then we got into growing. The children liked matching the herb/vegetable seed to their names. There were great discussions about particular seeds that were unfamiliar to some or many. Ideas for use within dishes were shared. Many parents were brought in to see the growth of seeds, and other activities. As we were donated more seeds, we have been able to grow for our school vegetable garden, and some were grown and taken home.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We linked in technology, math, writing, reading, the arts and physical education.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Learning more about the environmental impact of growing your own food in comparison to buying from the store/ not local.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It was interesting to find how many students had no idea where food came from - let alone how to grow their own. They were hands on and led the learning right from growing through to eating.
We have used a few kits over the past 2 years and this, by far, has been enjoyed the most by the students. From the get go, they were engaged in the learning and couldn't wait to do more the next day.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children all tried new veges and realised they like them raw. Parents gave me feedback that the kids talk about what they would like to eat at home.
Hi there, Ruma Toru loved our kit. We had a session to guess what might be in our parcel. We had lots of great ideas. The tamariki loved being part of the Little Garden League. They quickly learned the names of the seeds they were planting. We sorted them to discover seeds we didn't know and we researched them. The children planted their seeds and cared for them. They started to share the names of the veges they were eating at home. We transplanted our seedlings in the school garden and then we planted more seeds. We had shared kai where the children tried many of the veges they didn't know and it was fabulous to see them all trying something new. We can't wait to harvest our own veges from the garden. This kit was perfect for the Year1/2 class. Thank you. The tamariki are still caring for their seedlings and parents have added some raw veges in their lunchboxes. Thank you.
