What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We talked about how we can grow vegetables and herbs all year round using a plastic tunnel. We also discussed the making of food and cooking with what we have grown.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Learning about new vegetables that they have never heard of or experienced like watercress. hearing about other students and what they enjoy eating so they feel they can try something new.

“My new entrant class was very excited to receive our special secret box We waited a little while before we started our plants as our school is very close to our mountain in Taranaki and it wasn’t very sunny in our classroom. The children made their pledge and was excited to have two plants to look after. We are using this special resource to help us learn about spring and plants. Thanks so much for the secret box my class are really enjoying them.”

Writing was enhanced through descriptive pieces about their plants, procedural pieces about how to look after them and poetry. They created art pieces using paint that went with their writing. What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Creating our own gardens and looking further into healthy eating. What dies our body and brain need to be healthy.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It has reinforced what our bodies and brains need to work, play and learn. They created healthy meal plans then took these home. Some made their meals at home with lots of parents commenting on how involved they were in preparing and making the food.

The display added curiosity and looking and sharing others displays was so good. As a class we have decided to carry this over next term into healthy eating through growing our our vegetables in our gardens then harvesting them to eat. The website was informative and helpful.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Continue to look at Healthy Eating and more planting of seeds next Term.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The taste aspect is something I still would like to develop further next term. It has improved their awareness of healthy eating and discussions about which new vegetables they have tried.

“The Class and I have loved the Little Garden Kit. The application form, club house, you tube clips of folding the envelope etc... all inspirred and excited the children, the buy in has been 100%. I tied it in with Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori and the class and I have also learnt the names of the vegetables in te reo. The seedlings are growing beautifully and we will repot them to take home to our whānau. It has also inspired us to grow other seedlings and develop a mini plant inquiry topic. Thank you so much.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Learning how to grow plants and what is needed to grow them

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Children became more aware of the different vegetables and what they look like, how they grow etc.

We were able to write about the LGL, cover our measurement unit with monitoring plant growth and making comparisons, we learnt about science in relation to requirements for life and the life cycle of plants, we read about a range of fruits and vegetables

Some are still cautious, but the exposure still matters. Their curiosity has peaked and they are more and more willing to engage with the things tha

“Our Year 2 class was able to access the learning at a level suitable for them. The kit was hands on and very visual and the children absolutely loved being a part of caring for the plants each day. We could easily adapt and integrate the learning into other curriculum areas as well to suit our focus for the term. Loved it and would highly recommend! One of the best kits yet!”
