In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They have learnt new names of vegetables and have more willingness to try them. They get garden to table next year so was effective in preparation for that!

“My class loved it! Every morning they were so excited to come inside and see if their seeds have grown. We have looked into vegetables and fruits as well as the Māori names for them. The kids are so excited to take them home to show their parents. They loved the code crackers and asked every week where the new one was! Thank you so much!!”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Reading and writing with the codes. Maths with the measurement and lots of good oral language

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Looking at growth in plants, sustainability of plants and their key role in the environment. Looking at bees and insects and their roles in relation to plants.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They learnt the names of lots of new veges and the importance of eating veges to be healthy

“This was a great kit and the students just loved seeing the seedlings grow. They would rush in each day to check them out. They also really enjoyed the secret codes and we had a vege tasting day which they were great at having a taste of new veges.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? The code cracker was a great option in writing or reading. We also talked about how long it would take our seeds to grow so this linked to maths/measurement.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? To get them involved in gardening! Our plants will be planted in our school enviro hub for future learning.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It has made them aware after saying that the members were afraid the different types of vegetables would go extinct. It is hard now for the kids to wait until the end of next term to be able to eat what we have planted!

“The kids in my class were really excited about this kit as they felt special being a part of something top secret. they enjoyed becoming members of the club and trying to learn the founding members of the club. Planting the seeds was a great experience and carefully watching and watering the little pots was a great experience for everyone. This resource created many learning opportunities and discussion around vegetables . We were able to join with another class from our school and have a vegie tasting. Many of the children took risks and tried something new and some surprised themselves as they enjoyed a new vegie they hadn't tried before. We also enjoyed visiting our own school garden and sparked interest in joining the enviro group at school. As well as enjoying our little school garden many children went on to get more little pots from New world and are looking forward to growing their own little vegie patch at home. The letterbox was a bit challenging to make as the card was very thick and as it was the box having to find a new storage container for the seed pots. Overall this was a great resource and the children enjoyed this very much, had it been during a time we were looking at plants more closely this would have been fit extremely well, as a side unit it was great.”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? students have been willing to try new vegetables, they have made products from vegetables and learnt about edible flowers.

“The students have been totally engaged with the buy in of being 'top secret.' They have created actions and handshakes for their little league club. The codes were a hit and students used the codes to create their own messages. We went for a visit to our local botanic garden nursery to link in our growing. It was a hit all round.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We did lots of noticing and observing which is part of the scjmience curriculum. We did a lot of writingabiut the plants and reading around the decoding messages. We measured the stems.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? When the plants are grown we would try some food preparation in our classes. We would also continue to look after the plants and perhaps look at what flowers would provide natural pesticides.

“Students were really engaged in the little garden kit. They enjoyed seeing and learning about vegetables that they already knew, and also enjoyed building on this knowledge. Students loved the little garden league, seeing the vegetables as characters and utilising the website to find out more. We used many of the online resources to develop our understanding further. Watching videos and reading stories to understand the process and importance of growing vegetables. Students loved decoding the little garden leagues secret messages.”
