In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Our class was doing Edible Gardens at the same time so this linked in really well. The students planted their vegetables into the school garden. Manuka also enjoyed making their own codes during writing time.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? It is ongoing as the vegetables were planted in our school garden. The students are looking after this each week.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The kit introduced students to a range of vegetables and herbs which they have never heard of. The students loved coming to school and talking about the vegetables they had eaten for dinner.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? It taught us about what food is good for our bodies, what plants grow well together. What plants grow best in what season etc.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? It would be a great opportunity to see kids create their own recipes from the vegetables they have grown or sell them in the local market day to learn about small businesses and how they run.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Their awareness of different foods grew, they took videos and wrote me letters about the different foods they have tried.

“This was the best inquiry topic for us, my kids were able to engage with learning where food comes from (not just the supermarket) they were able to learn the process of growing food and what level of work this requires. We incorporated writing and maths. Everyone loved it so much they took their learning home and many of them had the desire to put in their own vegetables patches. School Let us buy more plants and plant our garden.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The little garden project leads perfectly into cooking the vegetables.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? By growing the vegetables ourselves the students understood better where the food comes from. We examined the benefits of eating junk food compared to eating fresh vegetables.

“My class loved the Little Garden. It has had side effects that I didn't expect such as three students encouraging their families to grow vegetables at home. It was a huge success with all the students, however it was more successful those students who learn better by being out doors and hands on activities.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Students were able to write and reflect on the different stages of their vegetables. It also provided opportunity for students to consider ways to improve the growing process and help their veggies thrive.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? They learned how to grow and maintain vegetables which they have been able to apply at home. We have been able to create innovative ways to keep the veggies growing i.e recycled planter boxes/plant pots made from old plastic bottles, cans etc.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students were able to grow and taste new vegetables that they hadn't before and also learn about the how they could help their whanau healthy for not a lot a money.

“This was a fabulous learning experience for my year 3 &; 4 class. They were able to use the knowledge that they learned about in the classroom and take it home to use in the real world. These were real life experiences that they will be able to cherish forever. This was especially valuable after the lockdown in Auckland.”

They reported they didn’t like it but tried new things, so that’s positive. Their knowledge of fruits and vegetable definitely grew, especially with the alliteration of vegetable names. “We loved the Little Garden Kit. The secrecy built excitement and interest. The secret codes were fabulous and we even wrote our own secret codes using LGL symbols to another LGL class at another school. It led us to lots of learning in plants, growing and life cycles.”
