We talked about all the seeds that students were growing and all were encouraged to talk to their parents around what they had. “The students loved this kit. From this we then planted out 3 planter boxes outside our classroom and were able to all take home some of the produce we grew, Lettece was on the top of the list. Each student took home their seeds they had planted and looked after. The other exciting thing was the secret code messages, after a little drama play by some of the teachers the students were completely hooked on the idea of being in a secret club.”

“I really loved the idea and the beginning of the activity however as it became common and the pots were given at the supermarket I felt like the secret was no so secret. I do know a few people who have kept up their gardens and are doing well. Mine all died. I feel that if you are doing it with schools - if there was a link with the supermarket then they would feel special - like every time they went to bee world they could get a special message or do a job or something secret that act made the school link more fun. What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Lead us down an inquiry into growing our own at school and sustainable sourcing of food. Led us into ocean sustainability and recycling!

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Some had no idea what a veg/fruit was before this unit. They couldn't name them before and some had never tried certain ones.

“Beautiful kit with engaging resources and perfectly explained teaching sequence. Really easy to implement into our programme and follow up at home with the New World link. Definitely recommend to other teachers. The children fully engaged with the resource, even though some.had only just started school. The level was appropriate and the learning was clear.”

We used this to make healthy kai and were then able to look at our Maori kai in relation to its healthy qualities, giving us opportun

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? In terms of healthy eating, tamariki could see the benefits in both health, sustainability and affordability. Instant food that is good for you. They were able to see that kai from the garden is not so bad tasting.

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We used the kit for our Growth/Inquiry so we learned lots about grouping, and labelling and writing about being a vegetable or fruit.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? If we had more time we would've talked and focused on planting and growing. Our main focus was on healthy eating.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? My students are 5yrs old. It was interesting to see how much they knew or didn't know about vegetables.

“My class really loved playing with the cards. They enjoyed learning about different fruits and vegetables. They had to look carefully at the picture to make sure it matched. We used the plants as a gift to their dad/male person in their lives for father's day. We enjoyed creating the cardboard house too.”
