In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We are learning about animals in Term 4 so the kit gave the students the opportunity make links to food chains and discuss the animals that eat plants and those that eat meat.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? One of the students brought in his own little garden plants from home to share with the class as he was so engaged with the planting activity. We have set up the little garden near the entrance to our classroom and the children enjoy going up to it during

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It is helping the students to become more aware of the different varieties of vegetables that are available and making them curious tasting them when they are ready.

Measurement - how tall plants were growing; Science - what plants need to grow; Reading - books around the classroom of plants, seeds and growing; Writing an application for joining the club and explaining why they would make great guardians of the seedli

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Science experiments - planting seeds in different types/quality of soil; giving too much vs no water; keeping in darkness vs sunlight etc. ; Making a vegetable soup using ingredients from our vegetables and herbs.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Unfortunately we did not get to use our plants for eating/nutrition due to the timeline involved. We will take this further once our seedlings have grown into established plants and then see if we can taste these (or use in some way or other to eat).

“Y1/2: There was great engagement in the classroom. Before joining the club, children had to ";apply"; to be responsible for looking after their plant. They also had to write about why they thought they would make a good member of the club. We discussed various ways in which we could lay out a garden and each child could choose which vegetables they would like to plant in their gardens. The helper of the day got to water the plants (unfortunately, some students got over-excited with the watering and we ended up with some plants going moldy). With the holidays approaching, each child was given their plant that they planted themselves, to take home to look after. The rest of the seedlings were left out in our Team Green Enviro group's shade house and watered occasionally. These were doing very well. We will get some potting mix and replant these soon into bigger pots. Children often share with the rest of the class how their plants have been growing (or not!). I believe it was a valuable experience for the children as they could observe and take responsibility for growing their own.”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It started a lot of great conversations around healthy eating and eating in moderation.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We learnt to take turns and share garden equipment when doing this. We also incorporated measurement into this activity with measuring out soil, and measuring water to water the plants.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Measurement for growth - and lots of discussion about the weather and how it affects our plants,

“This kit was amazing - I was lucky enough to have assistance in my classroom this year who loved doing this project with my class. Unfortunately some of our plants got ruined during the 2 week holiday, but others we managed to put in the green house and are growing beautifully.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This could lead to further inquiries into food and wellbeing.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? This has really made children think about what they are eating and they started noticing when they had healthy or non-healthy food.

“This was a great program. It was a little tricky for us to incorporate, as it was really an inquiry unit of it's own and we had a school inquiry that needed doing as well, however the kids really enjoyed and it walk around the school with their badges proudly on! A lot of it was a bit tricky for our Year 1s and they needed a lot of support. We also left out some of the activities as they couldn't achieve them. The Year 2s in our school did it too and said it was perfect for their age however, I think a bit of it was too sophisticated for our level!”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We were able to link the project to our earlier topics about bees and sunflowers and also linked it into art. Covered writing, science, inquiry.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I would like to repeat the project at another time to implement it more effectively.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children loved growing the plants but we were unable to implement the nutrition side of it effectively due to 2 lockdowns.

“The Little Garden project was a great idea and linked in well with our wastebusters programme. However due to the two lockdowns we were unable to implement it effectively. It would be a worthwhile project to repeat in the future.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Used as prompts for writing and received some of the best writing from the tamariki. Maths, learning statistics and looking at what the favourite vege was in our class, inquiry learning about the science of our healthy bodies, and wellbeing.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We are planning on using our knowledge of growing to grow sunflowers and other plants to give as gifts to parents at the end of the year.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The tamariki learned about the different vegetables and connecting to their very own lives. The kit has allowed the tamariki to be active in looking after their plants by watering, checking, watching them sprout. They tasted vegetables they never heard/se

“The tamariki in my class absolutely LOVED the little garden. The range of plants was fabulous. The tamariki loved their plants and enjoyed planting them in our specially designed area. It has been very engaging and they loved watching their plants grow.”
