In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This class participates with an 'inschool' model of garden to table, so there are regular opportunities to include recipes, food tech, garden experiences throughout the year.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Making vege muffins - some to eat, some to share with whanau, some to put in the freezer, for those days when someone needs more food for the day. This meets our school values of caring for others.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? There was plenty of discussions about the various seeds, uses in recipes, flavours, experiences of growing and eating. Children eat a variety of fruit and veges at brain break time (if possible). There is often subtle pressure from peers to have a fruit o
The class were very excited to have the kit, and set it up. There was a delay as we had other curricular and school wide events that needed to happen first! Then we got into growing. The children liked matching the herb/vegetable seed to their names. There were great discussions about particular seeds that were unfamiliar to some or many. Ideas for use within dishes were shared. Many parents were brought in to see the growth of seeds, and other activities. As we were donated more seeds, we have been able to grow for our school vegetable garden, and some were grown and taken home.

Our class loved every part of being part of our garden league. Lots of the students went and find a range of new vegetables and fruits. They enjoyed the planting and still look at our garden to check on our plants.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Connection is so important. The kit certainly provided a platform for cross-curricula learning. Great support for a local curriculum. We tied everything into this learning (because you can) ... awesome! We reviewed how we were developing the Key Competen
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Future learning is what this was/is all about - Great. The children became the experts over time. They have become the kaitiaki - carers and guardians. Sustainability was a word we used a lot. How can we keep the important work going - how can we share an
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Provided a hands on - authentic base (context) ... Garden to plate - Food always tastes better when you nurture/grow it yourself. We were able to focus in on what was grown and how it will help out bodies. Some children tried certain foods for the first
We did so much ... Great to check in with what others are doing to :) Super learning opportunities! Great to have extended vocabulary. Great for community (local) involvement....much interest and sharing . A resource that does support future learning, teacher inquiry and making connections (integration).

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? As mentioned above it tied in nicely with Healthy Eating. We also integrated it with literacy. We wrote about what we had done and our observations of the plants growing. We used the syndicate worm bin to feed our growing plants. We also enjoyed the story
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Ongoing learning about the school environment-practical use of syndicate worm bin fed with scraps from the children's brainfood break (fruit and vegies are only allowed) We also have school compost bins which we visited and linked to a story a child broug
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? This kit preceded a visit by the Life Education Trust to our school where our children focused on healthy eating. Thus the kit was nicely integrated with the children's on-going learning. The children have tried some seeds and vegetables in the classroom
This kit complimented our How Does Your Garden Grow? Inquiry for the beginning of the fourth term. Because the kit came out in the school holidays our school asked if we could delay the start and provide feedback at the end of our Inquiry. This was approved. It was an excellent resource to begin our Inquiry. The children enjoyed receiving the badge. They enjoyed planting the seeds, watching the soil expand and then waiting for the first shoots to appear. It's so helpful having supporting videos and information, too. We extended the kit, planting bean and sunflower seeds. We created animal plant pots using recycled milk bottles. Our school grounds has a lot of kowhai trees and we looked at ways to crack the hard seed coat to encourage them to germinate. We had 100% success with this. The children are about to paint a terracotta pot to put these in and take home as a gift.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Maths - Kids were able to measure the growing plants every couple of days then determine the changes in size. Health - Having vegies as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Art - Drawing and taking photos of their plants. Using their vegie as another '
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Science - Where vegies are grown. How plants grow. What they need to thrive. A general wanting to know more about vegies (were the first carrots really purple?!!). Science / Social sciences - How our actions/activities affect the plant and environment. H
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The focus on vegies as a healthy part of their diet.... they had to design a day's menu ensuring that there was a healthy aspect to each meal. I had the 'eat your colours' idea incorporated into this idea.
Due to Covid, the seeds were sent home as part of an ongoing project of learning at home. The kids planted the seeds then kept a log of photos, information, queries, etc that could be electronically communicated with me and peers. Although was not the best option in regards to using the kit, those kids who participated enjoyed watching their efforts 'sprout' and grow. Specified questions that I asked had the kids looking at different aspects in respect to the vegetables and herbs. I would certainly like to use this kit again but in a more controlled learning environment.
