What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? The tamariki really enjoyed filling out their letters and posting them in the mailbox. A couple of them helped me build the mailbox. I have found this a great stepping stone to us planting plants outside which is happening soon for our inquiry

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? This kit was great for Literacy. We ended up doing lots of wonderful poems based on this kit. The tamariki were inspired to write Haiku and Cinquain poems.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It was really great for exposing the tamariki to new vegies and for making them more aware of healthy eating. And also not being scared of vegies, especially since they'd planted them, watered them and looked after them. It made them have ownership of the
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? I think the tamariki are much better now at identifying different vegetables. There were some vegies that the tamariki had never heard of (Kale, snow peas), so it was great for this!
What an awesome kit! The tamariki really enjoyed the hands on nature of the little garden kit. It was easy to use and follow.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Linked nicely with a topic we had done previously and built onto their knowledge of healthy eating and what is good for our bodies and what is not so good for ou bodies.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Some had no idea what some vegetable were but have learnt there are so many more vegetables than what they typically have at home.
Kids love the Little Garden Unit. They were excitied to be part of a secret mission. They loved all the tasks and activities. I have managed to collect enough Little Gardens with my weekly shop to give them all one to take home and grow over the holiday break. This unit also linked in nicely with what we had previously looked at. Thanks for a great practical hands on unit.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We have grown other plants such as sunflowers. We have written and observed, drawn. There have been discussions around eating to nourish our bodies for a variety of activities eg sport.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? All want to be healthy. At aged 5-6 years-it's not their choice or in their control. Teachers also have no say in what children get or don't get. We will share the produce in a variety of ways but thats as much as can be done.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Most of the vegetables died on planting out. This makes recognition very difficult. Most of the children have a wide knowledge of fruit and veges that they eat. We haven't got to that bit yet.
Growing plants is always engaging for children as it is hands on and rewarding.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Science and literacy were our main focus for this kit but as the seedlings grow it would be a great opportunity for us to incorporate maths!

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Our students have been able to make the connection between some of the vegies they get in their school lunch to the ones we received in the kit.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? My students had no clue what some of the vegetables were so this helped with learning new ones and will continue to grow their knowledge as we look after the vegetables in our school garden
This kit fit perfectly with our learning around sustainability so we were stoked to have been chosen to get this kit. Our students were introduced to vegetables they had never seen or heard of before and this was a good way for them to make connections between the concepts we had discussed and to have a more hands on approach. No one even complained when we went to weed the school garden in preparation, for when our seedlings would be ready to go in! Thanks again for a fabulous kit and thank you new world!

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We have talked about trying new vegetables and eating the vegetables they are given at lunch/dinner. They are all theoretically keen to try swede.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? We didn't focus a lot on this but they have mainly learned by looking at each others plants as they have grown and discussing the germination time, repotting time and harvest time of the different plants.
I teach a year 3 class and I wasn't aware that they had previously had a little garden kit in year 1. I was worried that they would not get caught up in the whole story of myself being an original LGL member etc but I could not have been more wrong. From the "ancient" LGL badge found on the school grounds, to the discovery of vegetable books in our library and reports of staff seen eating vegetables, my class were fully engaged. One of my brightest students, who I thought might be a little cynical told me one day he thought his grandmother might have been an original member of the LGL and did I know her? I think our plants are healthier than in previous years - they have all grown really well and we have been holding "graduation ceremonies" as plants get to the stage where they need to go home to be repotted. Another fun activity they have been doing is writing a diary entry every few days, pretending that they are their seed. This week I am going to cook some swede, as this is a vegetable nobody in the class including myself has tried. Thank you for this school kit - it has been enjoyed by everyone in the class.

Even though our kit arrived later in Term 3 our students were itching to find out more about ‘the league’! Ākonga took the entire process quite seriously engaging in discussions about how they might be able to influence others to plant, nurture and grow food to feed those who are hungry! The learning application across multiple curriculum areas was impactful and gave an authentic purpose that tamariki enjoyed and as kaiako provided snapshots of successful learning. Although this reflection is being done now we intend to add on to this unit of mahi because our students want to continue with how they can feed others as our gardens flourish. From an admin point of view, the resources were top notch, instructions to teachers were clear, support and ideas from the community were inspiring and thoughtful…what more can be said? Loved this kit and looking forward to its resurrection next year! Thank you New World and School Kit! Arohanui, Koromiko @ St Columba’s School, Hamilton
