“Kia ora. I think that this is an awesome kit. The only problem is not being able to utilise it yet. My class will be looking at it next term. Co-vid as we all know has made a few of us anxious about our environment at school and it took a really long time for my students to come back to school. On top of this we have had a few students pass away which has also effected our students as well. I am also in the middle of teaching another science topic with another organisation called squawk squad which is why my class has not started the kit.”

I think our students have a better appreciation of nature and how everything has a role to play in keeping the balance in a healthy environment.

We loved using our maths, mapping skills, writing about what we were feeling, writing up Science experiments and making observations, drawing and painting what we could see, making notes and sharing them digitally, backed up with photographs.

“We have started this amazing kit and when our seeds have grown big enough we are going to create a patch of trees for future students to admire and explore at the school. We are loving learning about the nature around us and how we can protect and expand it in our own space to share with our community. We have lots of nature within our community spaces and we plan to explore them more, hoping to increase our appreciation and contribution to maintaining and treasuring our nature spaces here in New Zealand, recognising pests and ways to protect and appreciate our natural treasures.”

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? They are more observant - the Notice cards were cool - it has been super rainy so we didn't get to leave them out! The kids have been keen and attentive to our Kowhai seeds...possibly too attentive to watering...as the pots are mouldy...ooops.

What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? Relevance to day to day kids lives. Relevance to world sustainability and climate change crisis. Fun and hands on.

“This kit was good, however it admittedly got pushed to the back burner after covid came along. We were able to get through some of the work and the students enjoyed getting out and about in the nature when the weather allowed. It was very hands on and We enjoyed how varied the learning opportunities were. I will continue working on the kit and a lot of what I have done with my class will be useful for future years as well.”
