I was really excited to receive this kit and the kids in my class were excited to plant their seeds. Unfortunately only a few are sprouting. There are a number of learning opportunities and the children have been able to learn more about our natural environment. Thanks School Kit

The beginning stages of this kit was great. Hands on planting and getting samples etc. Interest in the kit did die down unfortunately and it was harder to keep students engaged to the end. The teacher notes aren’t as straight forward meaning more time is spent unpacking what the tasks really are. Pinterest links not overly stimulating.

Both our senior hub classes enjoyed the Nature Space topic, especially growing the kowhai seeds which all our students have taken home to plant. We chose a great nature space in our school, which is now being slowly developed into a sensory garden. Our students enjoyed learning about the moon phases and constellations but with time constraints and the weather we couldn't get outside into our space as much as we would have liked. If we didn't have so much on this term we would have continued on with this kit and developed it further. Amazing resource! Thanks so much!

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? The fact that we planted the seeds and are seeing them grow has developed our students' sense of nurturing. They feel like they 'own' these budding trees, and so are keen to see them have a new home where they can grow and attract more tui to our school.
What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? Amazing! We did the planting in connection with Matariki, linking to the idea of new beginnings. We have around 24 little kowhai seedlings now. The students have decided that we can share the seedlings with the people who run camp down in Paraparaumu, as

Loved using the kit!! We tied it in with a few other things that were going on at our school as we actually received the kit just prior to lockdown, and we had to wait until we got back to school to unpack it.

Great Resource. We enjoyed Nature as a context. We have our own school Nature Trail that we explore regularly. We often find Fantails pīwakawaka, skipping about in the trees with large snails slithering along with a host of interesting bugs that we can observe. We have large ferns and Tōtara, and majestically the largest Redwood in the mix. The learning was great because we can integrate history with the present. Our Kōwhai seeds are a winner. Most have all seeded and growing well.

Really impressed with the quality of the school kit that was delivered. With COVID, it has taken us a little longer to get through it but it has opened up opportunities to adopt a transdisciplinary approach to how we have integrated it with other areas of the curriculum.
