“Great opportunity for the kids to experience growing and experiencing the creation of their own nature space. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite follow the plan so we improvised and used bits of pieces in the kit as part of our Inquiry learning. So I’m sorry but we didn’t do this kit justice this year. Time just got away on us and it was poorly executed on my behalf.”

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? The kit has helped my students to be more aware of the impact humans have on the environment. The majority of my class now have a greater respect for Nature.

What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? It was great for my students to be able to learn in an outdoor space and to learn more about their local environment. It also provided an opportunity for some students to show strengths that are not so apparent in the classroom.

Learned about the Moon and the different phases. By having more knowledge, there was more appreciation for what was outside around them.

“The Kit was alright in terms of looking at nature for Science. I used it in my tech option class (2 x week) and the planting of the kowhai seeds and seeking out the nature spaces around the school was great. Aspects of it were more English based work, so did not fit in with what we were doing around environmental science. My students in this class were very much more practical based than writing.”

“Students really enjoyed this topic. Their observation skills developed and they began to take a closer look at the environment around them. The kit provided a wide range of activities to do. We chose certain activities that best fitted with our Topic and the school environment.as time became an issue to try and complete most tasks. The students really enjoyed planting the Kowhai seedlings and watching them slowly grow. They have been looking at places that some of these could be planted in the school area to develop a nature space. Our eco warriors club also planted some other trees to make our spaces beautiful. This prompted a lot of discussion on the best places for them to go and also how we could develop an area to attract birds and bugs. The Listening poems was another focus point to inspire students. We will continue to develop these ideas and look at how to further develop other areas around our school.”

They got into a routine of checking their plants each morning and watering them when necessary. The discussions we had about why they may not have begun

What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? It brought learning to life (literally) It gave the children something to physically look at and touch which was very useful as the children I teach have limited experiences.

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? Our students already have a keen interest in nature and have been involved over several years in riparian planting, however, this was a chance to look at our own nature spaces.

What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? It was a regrounding experience, particularly important when coming back to school following Covid lockdowns. Nature also lends itself well to integrating curriculum areas.
