Unfortunately due to time restraints and lockdowns we were unable to use this kit fully. However, we have planted our kowhai seeds and used this as one of our Call to Action tasks for Squawk Squad.

My class of year 7 and 8 students really enjoyed this nature spaces kit. In particular they enjoyed learning about kōwhai, which I then extended to studying other native trees around our school. I combined the planting of the kōwhai with a resource I created and also used a resource from TWINKL to extend the learning.

This kit has tied in extremely well with our school looking at developing a native bush area. The senior boys class have recently planted a number of native trees on a local farm. They are excited about their kowhai seeds sprouting and caring for them at school until they are established enough to plant in the farm space.

My year 5/6 class got a lot our of this kit even though we were interrupted during Covid. We used the kit to supplement our PBL topic during Term 2. "How can we, as conservationists, protect the native trees in our school forest and inform those who use the forest? We used Posterizer to map out our Nature Space and locate the areas that were special to us. We identified the native trees and tested the soil around them. Several groups had plans to create a 'treasure maps' of our forest with information and labels around the native trees. Others were creating an iMovie tour of our forest to inform the rest of the school. We are still working through these projects. The Kowhai seedlings have all grown, each child will take one home at the end of the year. We will plant the rest in the school forest.
