What cross curricular learning opportunities arose from using Nature as the context? Technology has played a big part with google maps to view the site from above, then maths mapping and doing grid work to plan. We have researched plants and ideal growing climates and looked at companion planting. We have looked at what animal/insects we

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? This is a space the tamariki are invested in. It is difficult for them to visualise how it might look in the future but they are noticing the small changes.
What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? Being the kaitiaki of our taiao is very much a value we are trying to instil in our tamariki and that they can shape the future. This kit was a fantastic catalyst for change for us.

Thank you for this comprehensive kit. Before the lock down our school had identified our nature space. It is a waste area on the bottom field that has become overgrown and unuseable. We have recognised the potential of this area and your kit has given us the resources to once again make it a valuable nature space. The project is being undertaken by a year 5⁄6 class under the guidance of our science teacher.. The kit’s planning sheet is well set out and follows the inquiry model we like to use. We have a high Maori population at our school, so the Te Reo resources are invaluable. The activity cards are easy to follow and we are sharing some aspects with whanau as well. We haven’t completed our project, it is a well thought out long term project

It was a little disjointed with the Lockdown. We really enjoyed growing the Kowhai seeds and also collected a number of other seeds from around our environment and have propagated them in the classroom and potted up and will be able to plant in our school grounds next growing season.

What cross curricular learning opportunities arose from using Nature as the context? Science: looking at how seeds work, how they are naturally spread and easy ways to collect them and grow them. Technology: using a drone to photograph the area we chose to upgrade, so that we have before and after photos to compare.

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? They came to see that nature is something to be 'nurtured' and cared for. They also realised the significance of respecting our environment through recycling etc to lessen the impact on the environment.
What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? It really made the children aware of the natural beauty around us but also about ways to enhance and protect our environment. We chose a desolate area in the back corner of our school field and were able to source some flax plants and other natives to pla

Digital learning, looking at what has happened with deforestation and the progress with replanting and the importance of this. Our school has a policy of taking home all rubbish that the children bring to school in their lunchboxes. It was interesting to

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? Again, I think that it is important to recognise the work that DoC does for New Zealand. Our school has a small bush area that isn't always used for teaching and learning. It was great to be able to explore this a bit more.
What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? The kit was great and worked in well when the children went to Camp Raglan. Living in New Zealand, it is important that we explore and embrace what New Zealand has got to offer and the work and progress that DoC has achieved.

Room 21 loved the nature space kit! We are lucky enough to have a bush block at our school so spent lot of time exploring, building huts and discovering. The excitement levels were high when we found tiny foot prints and bite marks . The links to our literacy programme though the poems was really effective. Great range of inside and EOTC activities.
