What would you say the impact of this kit has been on your students? As mentioned, the students and myself were really engrossed with this kit. The learning about who, what, where was fundamental in the teaching of this kit. Just learning about the nuclear side of things was really enriching.

Which resources were most engaging and most useful to students? A method for historical thinking. Wall Planner. Mixed hard copy and digital sources for students. How to use the decision making cards.

Students were absolutely fascinated by the contents of the kit and all of the different pieces of evidence that they had to sort and read through. They were already quite interested in history as a subject, but this has definitely sparked further interest

Which resources were most engaging and most useful to students? Giving their personal voice about how they feel about nuclear New Zealand after researching.

“Wonderful School kit, our students found it a little daunting to begin with, but then when we focused on the Rainbow Warrior bombing, they were hooked. Their assessment was relating information from their research in the cards from the rest of the box that they researched and how it linked to the Rainbow bombing and their own personal views on NZ being nuclear free. Our students exceeded our expectations. They questioned us on the Prime Ministers and safety of Nuclear etc. What an amazing new topic that drew students in and is so interesting. Loved it.”

But I feel as this content came not from me, so to speak, but from another source akonga realised the Navy is just as vital as the Army and have contributed lots with NZ history

What would you say the impact of this kit has been on your students? the kids really struggled with the negative impacts. In regards to the testings and the lack of accountability of the bombing. I feel they were shocked that society doesn't always have happy endings or that life isn't fair.

Which resources were most engaging and most useful to students? The videos and interviews. The records with the Spotify links they loved too. This actually brought on a side bit of learning about vinyls and cassette tapes!

“I'm an ex RNZN sailor myself so to be able to weave my old life into my class had me excited from the start. This kit was great to help akonga realise that NZ really are change makers and can have an impact on the rest of the world. Many new the basics but didn't realise how far this went and I feel it resulted in them asking more questions about society as a whole.”

“Hi team, this term didn't quite end up as intended with losing my classroom due to school renovations etc so the kit was not quite as useful as imagined. Having Covid in the middle of the unit didn't help this either. However, many of the amterials were useful and the studnets ejoyed pouring over the replica artefacts and considering NZ's roile in the anti nuclear movement.”

This kit provided so many text to world connections, text to text connections and fostered fantastic classroom discussions around so many issues in connection with this topic. A great springboard for some student led inquiries, espcially over the concerns

Which resources were most engaging and most useful to students? The students love all the recreated maps, certificates, and flags. That is always the highlight - displaying these around the room for students to engage with.

“This was a really fun kit. It took a minute to get the students thoroughly engaged. Some students were really into while others were not. I appreciated all the teacher support materials to build my own knowldge and I feel if I used this kit again (which I intend to) I would do a much better job the second time around. As always these kits are highly engaging and students are getting high quality learning from them.”
