I taught this kit in four Year 5/6 classes this term. We focused on two kaupapa: Impact and Mātauranga, which have cultural significance in our local area (Ōtautahi). Thanks to the depth of information to be found in the teacher resources, and the fantastic format of the student site: somethinghappenedhere.co.nz, all classes were able to dive deeply into these kaupapa, and also connect them with previous and new in-lcass learning. The peheha at the beginning of each study enabled us to explore sites such as Te Aka and Ka Huru Manu to build knowledge of our local areas, as well as springboard us into refining our own pepeha. We were able to also further investigate, to include learning about our immediate area in our community -eg the significance of the Tī Kōuka at Burnside High School and Hereora Springs at Jellie Park and the connections of these places to Raureka's journeys. The children were able to build a better understanding of how how to analyse artifacts, combining ideas to develop a possible idea of what happened here. This was a highly valuable, critical thinking task. As was the development of analysing history for whose voice is evident and whose is missing. Some children drew a correlation between scientific advice being ignored or downplayed in history (at the proposal of introduction on ferrets, stoats, weasels to control rabbit population), as is happening from some groups with the current issues of climate change. I highly recommend this as a reliable, flexible resource for teachers that will make for many, many years of deep, pertinent and essential learning.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It provided the inspiration to delve more deeply into local history, and a handy framework to use that makes it all far less daunting a prospect. Mostly it gave my teaching team a shared touchstone and development scheme for pursuing that shared goal

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? It made history real for the tamariki, they engaged with personal narratives as actual events rather than things that exist only in books or worksheets. Moreover, it gave them a sense of being historical beings themselves - living in a time and place and

The visuals definitely supported my students engagement with the kit, however due to my students diverse learning abilities I used another teaching approach which was creativity- digital short films - documentary

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? This resource has been really helpful. I have not yet even fully engaged with all the resources supplied (physically and digitally) as there is so much packed in here and at so many different levels of the curriculum. What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? It gave me a sense that I was teaching things that had genuine voice. It allowed good conversations with learners to take place about bias, perspective and how even history can change over time as our lenses and understanding shift.

This kit is exceptionally well presented and useful. The resources are multi functional and encouraged deep, rich, meaningful conversations. The supporting material allowed me to develop my own knowledge alongside my students. Many things I was aware of, some, not so much. The variety of possible teaching paths allowed learners to work at their own pace and depth. I felt empowered to not know, and then grow.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? There is a serious lack of southern voices in this resource. Impact and Franchise were probably the only two stories that really connected to our local area. The group working on Impact were surprised at the history of Hagley Park as we visit it every wee

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? If anything, it has probably lessened my confidence. I am passionate and knowledgable about history and enjoy teaching it, but relentlessly filtering everything through a 2022 social justice lens is tiresome and degrades the context our ancestors lived in

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? The impact on me as an educator was high. I liked that each story had a section to explain what the important stakeholders wanted us to know. I would use this information to help frame discussions with my students. The impact on student learning was proba

Using the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Kit with my year 7/8 class, I was struck most, not by the voices that were present, but by the ones that weren't. And of course, those voices shape our identity. The personal, the cultural and the national. I personally traverse two worlds of identity. I'm a male, post-colonial Pākeha. I'm a vague exonym navigating awkwardly somewhere between insult and imagination, depending on who you talk to. A ‘Tangata Tiriti’ who helps run the Kapahaka. I am also a 7th generation ancestor of proud colonials. Scottish stoicism. Work as a moral good. Survivor of the industrial revolution. The Highland Clearances. Colonisation on colonisation. Human endeavour from adversity. Or white privileged. Again, depending on who you talk to. This resource emphasises the fact there are always two voices to a story. But what voices? What stories? The labourers, explorers, settlers, inventors, pioneers? Stories like two of my 3rd great-grandfathers? They're not uncommon! Take James McNeil 1799–1876, who escaped bonded servitude as a horseman in Dunbartonshire after his clan were driven from their land on the Scottish island of Barra. He went on to found Balclutha. Is his kind of story here? Take also William Riddler 1801–1879. Pretty good story! Duped by the New Zealand Company, he fought for his life in the Hutt Valley, and dragged his dying neighbour's son from the Hutt River after being attacked by some Māori, displaced by Te Rauparaha. Or maybe my wife's ancestor, Carl Neilsen 1848–1919, who invented the otter trawl in Hawke's Bay, revolutionising the global fishing trade. A nod to the industrialists without a suffragette or eco angle in the mix? Not without"The Message", team, because there's really only one narrative here. These people didn't live in a bubble of course, but their voices aren't really in this resource because they aren't heard in their own context. None of them are. At least, not without the footnoting, the qualifying, the re-contextualising, and the continual cultural reframing this resource puts on events by making them all about 2022 values. The guise of balancing the story with the actual outcome of changing it altogether, which of course is the goal of this kit. Because however carefully crafted and user-friendly, this resource is deliberately not about specific parts of Aotearoa New Zealand's history. Not really. Not honestly. But it's okay. I get it. Some people might think it’s about time. But this history is just someone's story.

This kit provides teachers with a lot of very well organised information and resources. It enables the teacher to continue a Histories discovery in a way of their choosing. The tasks themselves required a significant about of reading from students. A lot of time would be required to fully utilise this fabulous resource.

My class loved using this kit. They found the"Something Happened Here"website engaging and informative while still provoking wonderings. I introduced one “postcard” to look into as a class and next term will give learners some agency to pick what inspires them. I think a directed approach first time around is needed for learners to be successful navigating the website and in moving through the tasks. We focused on “Chinkon” and also read “Enemy Camp” by David Hill which complemented the learning beautifully. This is a great resources that I’m sure I will be using for years to come. Thank you for putting this kit together.
