“My class has had an amazing time exploring photographs and the artefacts. They were inspired to use their lunchtimes to find more information in the school library - and I think that is huge! I even used this resource with the staff at our teacher-only day to introduce the history curriculum. So many opportunities to do different things. Finding the places and researching the pepeha was such an inspiring way to start. I really see me continuing to use the kit. I'm really sad I don't have photographs but we kept getting so caught up researching and exploring!”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It has made us think more about local history and how we can incorporate it into our curriculum. We can use resources and archives from school kit to help us discover more about our community.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I love teaching this kind of thing as history/social studies is of great personal interest to me. Having everything in one place makes it easier to deliver and the website is very student (and teacher) friendly.

“What a fabulous school kit! My class has only managed to work through a couple of the 36 “something happened here” photos as there’s so much to do, even for one task. However, the resources, links and information are excellent and we have all learnt so much already. Going forward it will be great to do tasks at specific times of the year to fit in with our teaching modules eg: teach ‘Autonomy’ in September as we celebrate Women’s Suffrage.”

“This resource was initially overwhelming, however once really studied and unpacked, my colleague and I understood how amazing this resource was and we found a starting point and were off! “Our year 7& students engaged really well with the start point being pepeha and the end point being them presenting their findings. Students worked together and went off on tangents at times with whatever facinated them about the story they were unfolding. I like the skill of reading photos/paintings adn finding related items or information. Impressive range of resources to reach out to all kinds of kids about significant events, places and people in Aotearoa. We all learned loads of interesting and relevant new stories.”

“Hi there, Wow! I appreciate the huge amount of effort and love that was poured into the making of this phenomenal kit. To be honest, I found it tricky to get around and I had to reinvent activities as it was too hard for my class. I pulled out separate events and looked at them with my class. We started with the Rainbow Warrior postcard then kids created a google slide using the Alphabet Key to gather information.”
