How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We are going to explore our local area as a whole school next year. We will use our learning from the kit and apply it throughout the whole school as we 'read' our historical photographs related to our school and district.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I now understand how the curriculum is laid out and have examples in mind. It has helped me to confidently talk to other staff about the new curriculum too.

“We have only really just begun! I have used the kit as a whole class resource but often the students branch off into little groups to research and discover things together. It has prompted a lot of discussion and wondering and has prompted us to consider what has happened in our area. The resources (digital and hard) have been so exciting to discover.”

“My Y5&6 class found this kit really interesting, particularly the part where they were required to find the artifact and photos that represented their postcards. The stories were interesting and the supporting resources (websites, photos, videos etc) were well chosen. It was relevant, factual and gave the students many different skills to practice, plus the opportunity to gain new knowledge and understandings. Some of the stories were a bit high-level for some students so this might be worth considering for the future. Also the kit took much longer than it seemed like it was planned to take - so the students could get the most out of it I would recommend taking more time over an increased number of lessons, particularly with this age group. The student website was great - and it'd be nice to see the missing postcards uploaded to go back into in the future. I'd highly recommend this kit!”

I am feeling more confident to share these histories as I begin to understand more of our NZ history- so important. I was lucky enough to experience learning some of my local history as a child in my school, but I know this was not the case in all schools

Huge confidence boost - I find myself following different paths through for myself just to up-skill my knowledge. And the wide ranging topics that aren't just the usual run-of-the-mill facts are fantastic. Thanks heaps for this kit.

“This kit is amazing. There is so much in it - so much learning - for me, not just my students. I debated long and hard about where to start and eventually began with Tikkun Olam. This was motivated by the fact I had a Y7 Jewish boy in my class - newly arrived to New Zealand from Israel. He became my class expert - he would go home and talk with his parents about what we'd discussed in class and then come back and add to our conversations. I think my students have grown in expressing empathy and understanding. They are becoming better at researching and squirrelling out facts from different sources. And we're not finished - this is an ongoing journey for both myself and my students next term. (And, although I'm retiring at the end of the year, I will use this kit when I'm doing team leader release as an ongoing project.)”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It has motivated me, however I felt a bit overwhelmed with too much information. It would have been easier if it was divided into smaller boxes covering a specific rea.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It has shown me the vast array of topics that we can cover and the scope. I however did find that with the limited time I have to plan it was too much and a tad overwhelming. I struggled to access the website and find the resources I was looking for.

“I found the box full of interesting material and photographs but struggled to find my way around the website and then choose a direction to go in. It was almost too much information and I needed to break it down into a simpler format.”
